Biography/History

The Madison Committee to End the War in Vietnam (CEWV) was founded in 1965 in response to the United States bombing of Haiphong, North Vietnam. The group's purpose was to initiate, sponsor, and carry out educational and political activities designed to arouse public pressure and action, and thereby ultimately to achieve the withdrawal of the United States from Vietnam. To this end the Committee sponsored local marches, demonstrations, films, talks, and workshops, and participated in national conferences and marches. It became aligned with the national Student Mobilization Committee in 1967 and formally changed its name to the U.W. Student Mobilization Committee in the early fall of 1969.

Scope and Content Note

The records of the Madison CEWV document its involvement in anti-war activities for the years 1965-1971, both on the local and national level. However, the records contain only relatively little material concerning the internal operations of the CEWV. Many of the individual items are undated.

The ADMINISTRATIVE FILES contain scattered minutes of meetings of the executive board and general membership, and membership and mailing lists for the Committee and for Crisis, the organization's newsletter. Worklists consist predominantly of sign-up sheets for various CEWV projects and operations. The financial records, composed of check registers and receipts, are also fragmentary. Included are invoices and bills for orders of anti-war literature to be sold by CEWV. A fairly complete run of correspondence also contains many form letters from other anti-war groups.

The ACTIVITIES series, arranged chronologically, consists of correspondence, reports, leaflets, and clippings documenting local and national conferences and demonstrations organized or attended by CEWV members. The Kennedy confrontation file concerns the visit of Senator Edward M. Kennedy to the University of Wisconsin in October 1966 and the attempt of CEWV members to force him to speak on the issue of the war. The Dow file pertains to the demonstration held to protest the presence of Dow Chemical Company recruiters on campus. The Zwicker Defense Case concerns the refusal of the University to readmit student Robert Zwicker because of his political activity.

The PUBLICITY AND WRITINGS file includes a research file of pamphlets and papers used in preparation of the writings, press releases, and leaflets in this series. The Crisis file contains rough drafts of articles, notes, and miscellaneous materials relating to the preparation of the Committee's newsletter.

SUBJECT FILES are arranged alphabetically and contain information on various groups in which the CEWV took an active interest, including the Madison Mobilization Committee, of which the CEWV was a founding member.

Material from other anti-war groups (including a file concerning Young Socialist Alliance anti-war activities and YSA involvement with the Student Mobilization Committee) has been separated to the Social Action Vertical File. Material received by the CEWV from the national office of Student Mobilization Committee has been integrated into the SMC collection (Mss 339).
