Madison Urban League Records, 1962-1966, 1971

Biography/History

The Madison chapter of the National Urban League was founded in 1910 to improve the economic situation and social status of urban Negroes, and to better race relations in the U.S. The national organization is comprised of local branches which are members of and financed by local United Funds or Community Chests. The Urban League is open to individuals of all races. Its major emphasis today is on vocational guidance and job services. The Madison Friends of the Urban League was established late in 1962, to make a study of community needs and problems to determine if the need for an Urban League chapter existed. During 1965 and 1966 efforts to formally establish a branch, funded by the United Community Chest, were at last successful.
