The Madison Policemen's Protective Association was established on August 7, 1927, with the purpose of providing legal aid for members in criminal or civil cases which arose in the course of official police work. By 1945 the functions of the association had expanded to include establishment of a sickness benefit fund for its members, a retirement benefit fund, and a death benefit fund for surviving family members. In addition, the association's activities also included various social and athletic events such as bowling tournaments, picnics, and dances. Although the records of the MPPA suggest that its collective bargaining history has been tranquil, it engaged in many activities typical of labor organizations such as studies of wages and labor conditions and legislative lobbying.
The MPPA is affiliated with the Wisconsin Policemen's Protective Association.
