Jack Krueger Papers, 1922-1978

Biography/History

Jack Krueger was born on December 2, 1914 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He attended South Division High School and the University of Wisconsin in Madison where he earned a degree in journalism.

Krueger began his career as a newspaper reporter in 1937 but switched to radio in 1938. In 1942, he was named news editor for WTMJ radio which gave him the opportunity to set up the radio news operation at the Journal's newly built Radio City broadcast facilities. Krueger was named news editor for the radio station and WTMJ-TV in 1947 when the television station began broadcasting. He remained news editor until 1968 when he was named Public Affairs Director, a position he held until he retired in 1980.

Krueger was actively involved in a number of state and national professional organizations. He was on the first Board of Directors of the National Association of Radio News Directors in 1946 and in 1957, after NARND became the Radio-Television News Directors Association, was named president.

Among the honors Jack Krueger received was induction into the Milwaukee Press Club Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 1991. He died in September 2000.
