Biography/History

Jack Krueger was born on December 2, 1914 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He attended South Division High School and the University of Wisconsin in Madison where he earned a degree in journalism.

Krueger began his career as a newspaper reporter in 1937 but switched to radio in 1938. In 1942, he was named news editor for WTMJ radio which gave him the opportunity to set up the radio news operation at the Journal's newly built Radio City broadcast facilities. Krueger was named news editor for the radio station and WTMJ-TV in 1947 when the television station began broadcasting. He remained news editor until 1968 when he was named Public Affairs Director, a position he held until he retired in 1980.

Krueger was actively involved in a number of state and national professional organizations. He was on the first Board of Directors of the National Association of Radio News Directors in 1946 and in 1957, after NARND became the Radio-Television News Directors Association, was named president.

Among the honors Jack Krueger received was induction into the Milwaukee Press Club Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 1991. He died in September 2000.

Scope and Content Note

The Jack Krueger Papers are organized in three series: Krueger at WTMJ, Professional Organizations, and Speeches and Publications.

Series 1: KRUEGER AT WTMJ is material directly relating to the operation of the radio and television stations owned and operated by The Journal Company (now Journal Communications Inc.). The material covers a wide range of topics including cameras in the courtroom, the Federal Communication Commission's Fairness Doctrine, employee manuals, the development of WTMJ-TV, television and radio audience surveys, and the Milwaukee Journals' dispute with Milwaukee Mayor Henry Maier.

Series 2: PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS consists of material from a number of state and national professional organizations of which Krueger was a member. Most of this material relates to the National Association of Radio News Directors which in 1952 became the Radio-Television News Directors Association; the majority of the NARND and RTNDA material is minutes, reports, and copies of speeches given at the annual convention. There is also material pertaining to the National Television News Seminars held in 1953 and 1954 at Northwestern University in Illinois.

Series 3: SPEECHES AND PUBLICATIONS contains miscellaneous publications from national organizations and speeches given by people in the media profession. They deal with the coverage of news by radio and television; the speeches were given by Sig Mickelson, Ralph Renick, Frank Stanton, Lee Loevinger, and others.
