Record [August, 1903]

View digitized contents of this folder.

Note

This journal was apparently AL's field journal for his trip to Estes Park and Yellowstone National Park in 1903. Some notes formed the basis for entries in his 1903 journal (folder 002, above).

This particular journal was never explicitly described in the printed finding aid.

Ornithological Lists and Notes, 1902-3

View digitized contents of this folder.

Note

Included are small notebooks in which AL recorded some of his earliest ornithological observations (principally bird lists).

The contents of this folder were formerly divided into two folders in the original, printed finding aid; however, the finding aid did not explicitly identify which items belonged to which folder. During the digitization process in February 2008 the small notebooks and bird lists were combined into a single folder.

Note

The Forest Service required its members to keep daily records of their activities in official diaries (folders 007 through 013). AL's entries were usually minimal, and do not seem to include every week or month. Some of the notebooks are unbound and portions may be missing.

Note: Contains selected quotations from books and articles that Leopold read over the years--primarily from c. 1914 to the early 1930s. The notebook is an excellent source of insight into the works and authors that influenced Leopold during these years. Many of the quotations he eventually wove into his own books and articles, sometimes repeatedly.

Diaries and Journals: Shack Journals, 1935-1948

View digitized contents of this box.

Note: The Shack Journals constitute a detailed record of the activities of the Leopold family and their guests at a farm AL purchased in 1935 on the Wisconsin River near Baraboo. The volumes contain phenological observations, birdsong notes, Shack lists, planting records, maps, photographs, and even indexes. According to Robert McCabe, AL would make most of his field notes in a small black address book which he always carried in his shirt pocket, then make journal entries when he returned to the Shack. McCabe collected about 12 discarded address books, 1944-46, most of the pages of which are crossed out to indicate that the material had been entered in the journal.
