View digitized contents of this series. These files contain correspondence with individuals. Mr. Leopold apparently began
keeping these files when he joined the University of Wisconsin faculty in 1933. General
folders (labeled A-Z) contain correspondence on miscellaneous game and conservation
matters, 1933-1948. For these folders, only indviduals with whom there is considerable
correspondence or whose names appear prominently elsewhere in the Leopold papers have
been listed. Individuals who were students of Mr. Leopold are designated with an
asterisk. A few folders in this series were deposited in the UW--Madison Archives by various
Leopold students and colleagues. Included in these are some of Mr. Leopold's handwritten
letters on yellow-lined paper, copies of which he would not have had in his own
files. It should be noted that this is miscellaneous correspondence. Additional correspondence
with many of these individuals, and with many others as well, may be found filed
according to content in other folders throughout the Leopold papers. Papers in these folders are generally arranged in reverse chronological order; this
appears to have been the order in which AL filed his correspondence.

the population dynamics and ecological characteristics of the ruffed grouse. AL, in
his role as head of the SAAMI-sponsored game survey, oversaw these research efforts
(in partnership with Herbert Stoddard). Mr. King's work was conducted at the

View digitized contents of this series. This series includes correspondence and other documents (c. 1929-48) pertaining to
professional societies, committees, conservation organizations, government agencies,
research stations, conferences, consultant positions, magazines, and journals. Mr.
Leopold was actively involved in some official capacity with virtually all of these; for
most, he prepared reports, memoranda, or articles. The papers contain many instances of
Mr. Leopold's conservation philosophy in practice. Equivalent materials from the years prior to 1928 were probably not as voluminous, and
some may have been lost. Others may be found, however, with the professional
correspondence that Mr. Leopold kept at his home (9/25/10-8 001 001), and also scattered
throughout the species and subject files. Papers are generally arranged in reverse chronological order; but within this general
framework it is clear that AL clipped together some batches of correspondence
thematically.

Organizations, Committees: Delta [Duck Station -- Manitoba]
View digitized contents of this box. Box 003 continues Leopold's "organization and committee" files. AL's relationship
to Albert Hochbaum's waterfowl research at the Delta Duck Station, Delta, Manitoba,
was organizationally complex. Delta was one of the research units financed by the
American Wildlife Institute, under supervision of its Technical Committee, chaired
by AL (see AWI folders, Box 001). Among other duties, AL apparently handled Delta
financial arrangements for the Institute. Hochbaum was AL's student at the time he
began his research at Delta in 1938, and later received his master's degree from the
University of Wisconsin for a thesis based on early Delta findings. Miles D. Pirnie
of Michigan, however, was to supervise Hochbaum's research work at Delta while AL
was to serve as a policy adviser. Along with Pirnie and William Rowan, AL was appointed to a Delta Board of Advisors,
created in 1940 by the Cooperators (James Ford Bell and AWI), and it was apparently
in this capacity that he undertook to edit Hochbaum's "Bulletin No. l," published as
"Canvasback on a Prairie Marsh" in 1944. After 1942, AL apparently had no official
connection with the station; correspondence thereafter is with Hochbaum as a
professional and friend.

welfare of the rural population of the United States ... in such ways as the Board
of Trustees may from time to time determine." AL was asked to make a study for the

Komarek (preliminary study by Herbert Stoddard, E. V. Komarek, and Roy Komarek) of
the biological facts in the controversy between federal departments over
extermination of deer on the Seminole Reservation in the interest of cattle fever
tick control. In addition to AL's correspondence on the issue, this folder
contains carbon copies of correspondence and memoranda between John Baker, Herbert

and another trip (and report?) in August 1938. He continued as advisor to the club
and to Richard H. Manville, who was investigator in wildlife research at the club,

AL and five others to serve as an organizing committee; AL accepted. On 27 March
1935 he was asked to be the first president, but declined, feeling that the

View digitized contents of this series. Mr. Leopold apparently set up the County, State, and Foreign Files when he began his
game surveys for the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute (SAAMI) in
1928. Since the surveys were originally intended to cover the entire country, he began
filing clippings on game matters from newspapers, state conservation bulletins, and the
DuPont Conservation News ; digests of and extracts from
books and articles he had read; maps, data, reports, and other materials, all designated
miscellaneous. He also used the miscellaneous files to store extra outline maps, most of
which have been removed. The correspondence in these files is of about equal bulk with the miscellaneous
materials for each state, and includes letters to and from cooperators of the survey,
officials of SAAMI and its Committee on Restoration and Protection of Game (especially
Stewart Commeaux, John M. Olin, Elliott C. Dill, and L. W. T. Waller, Jr.), and other
friends. It concerns game matters, potential game surveys, and conservation issues in
the various states. The files contain additional correspondence and data for states
actually surveyed by Mr. Leopold -- Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota,
Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin. SAAMI game research fellowships are the
subject of correspondence with David Gorsuch in Arizona (quail), R. E. Yeatter in
Michigan (ring-necked pheasant and Hungarian partridge), and Ralph King in Minnesota
(ruffed grouse and cycles). Materials relating to Paul Errington's fellowship at the
University of Wisconsin (quail) are not found in this series, but there is some material
in the Bobwhite folder (9/25/10-4 002 004). Some correspondence describes private consulting by Mr. Leopold in the period between
the termination of his support by SAAMI in early 1932 and his faculty appointment in
August 1933, but after 1933 materials in the state files begin diminishing gradually to
about 1940. The Wisconsin files, arranged by county, contain correspondence and notes, reports,
maps, reprints, clippings, and other materials on wildlife history and game management,
gathered mostly during the game survey and the early years of Mr. Leopold's faculty
position, about 1929-1939. Some folders contain plat books, land economic inventory
maps, wildlife management plans by Mr. Leopold and others, student papers on various
areas, and consulting reports. The foreign files contain correspondence and articles from about 1930-1940 on wildlife
and conservation philosophy. Arrangement of folders is alphabetical by county (Wisconsin), state, or country.

View digitized contents of this series. AL apparently set up the species and subject files in the early 1920s in connection
with his proposed book, "Southwestern Game Fields" (ms. 1927), later titled "Deer
Management in the Southwest" (ms. 1929). See Southwestern book manuscripts in 9/25/10-6,
Box 10. Correspondence in the files indicates that after Mr. Leopold left the Southwest for
Madison in 1924, he continued to send clippings, notes, and other items "for the files"
to his co-authors in New Mexico, J. Stokely Ligon and R. Fred Pettit. It is not clear
whether he ultimately brought those files to Madison (perhaps after his deer-hunting
trip to New Mexico in November 1929, by which time work on the joint manuscript seems to
have ceased), or whether he retained copies in back-up files of his own. At any rate,
materials in the species and subject files in the UW-Madison Archives seem to have been
written or collected almost entirely by AL. The earliest material (to about 1929) relates largely to the "Southwestern" book and to
a few of Mr. Leopold's early articles on game management. Some material in these files
(1928-1930) pertains to general or summary aspects of the Report
on a Game Survey of the North Central States (1931), although most material for
individual state surveys is in the state files. A good deal of correspondence and other
material, especially 1930-1931, concerns various sections of Leopold's textbook, Game Management (1933). After 1933, content of most of the
folders is of a more miscellaneous nature and diminishes in quantity. Exceptions are
certain species and subjects, such as upland game birds, whitetail deer, rabbits,
cycles, food patches, etc., on which AL's research interests centered during the 1930s.
In such folders, there is considerable correspondence with students and colleagues, as
well as data and occasional working papers for articles. (See also the research area and
project files, 9/25/10-5, and research manuscripts working papers, 9/25/10-6, Boxes 007
and 012.) The species and subject files originally contained about equal quantities of
correspondence and miscellaneous material. At the time the files were deposited by the
University of Wisconsin Department of Wildlife Ecology, however, most of the published
items (except for occasional duplicates) were removed, along with materials filed after
1948. (A few folders accessioned earlier are included in this series, and may include
some published items.) Published materials removed from the files were mostly clippings
and articles from state game bulletins and popular outdoor magazines, such as Outdoor Life . Certain folders containing solely published items
were not accessioned, and contents of a few folders have been consolidated, but the
series is arranged substantially as it was originally. The correspondence in this series indicates the breadth and character of AL's contacts
with sportsmen, wildlife researchers and administrators, government officials,
businessmen, and various individuals throughout the country in other professional and
private roles. It also indicates the extent to which certain of his research efforts
consisted of synthesizing heterogeneous data and observations and experiences of others.
In addition to correspondence, the files contain extracts from letters filed elsewhere;
AL's notes on his own field observations (including many made while on forest inspection
trips in the Southwest) and on observations reported to him by others; extracts from
published sources; AL's "digests" of books and articles; a few clippings from
mimeographed serials, such as United States Forest Service daily bulletins; occasional
cross-references to material in other files; and manuscripts, charts, maps, checklists,
and other working papers by AL. Species folders are arranged by type of species: Big Game (Boxes 001-002), Upland Game
Birds (Boxes 002-003), Songbirds (Box 003), Waterfowl (Box 004), Predators and
Furbearers (Box 004), and Rodents, Fish, Exotics (Box 005). Subject folders follow in
alphabetical order (Boxes 006-008). Material within each folder is arranged chronologically, although in many cases the
"original" AL material (correspondence, notes, manuscripts) is filed first and all
miscellaneous (and often undated material) is filed at the end of each folder.

publication, even at the masters level. His main focus during the 1930s was on applied
ecology, the development of actual techniques and practices of game management, and
demonstration on the land -- hence these research areas, on which he delegated actual
land management responsibilities to his more advanced students. The Riley and Faville
Grove areas served, in addition, as demonstration areas in farm game management
organization. The bulk of the material pertains to research accomplished before World War II forced
curtailment. Included are AL's personal files of correspondence and records on the
various areas and projects; area atlases containing reports, data, correspondence, and
other records of historical value; such actual student research notes, manuscripts, and
correspondence as were retained in Mr. Leopold's files; and banding records coordinated

instrumental in establishing this wildlife area, comprised of a group of cooperating
farms in Waterloo Township (Jefferson County). It was named in honor of Stoughton W.
Faville (1852-1951), a pioneer farmer and naturalist who encouraged and aided
University of Wisconsin research efforts on the area. Among students who worked on
the area were Judson Kempton, Ralph Conway, Arthur Hawkins, Hilbert Siegler, I. O.
Buss, Lyle Sowls, C. T. Black, and R. A. McCabe. Student materials (Boxes 003-004)
bulk largest for the years 1936-1938, when Arthur Hawkins was area manager. Contents

AL and R. J. Paulson, a farmer near Riley in western Dane County, and was licensed
as a shooting preserve. The group consisted of about 11 farm members who furnished
land and grain and 5 town members (of whom AL was "spokesman") who furnished
operating funds. Graduate students assigned to the area, 1936-1939, were Ellwood
Moore, H. Albert Hochbaum, Lyle Sowls, and Bruce Stollberg. Some of the items in this box, including the Atlas, were on loan to the Department
of Wildlife Ecology as of July 2007. These items were made available for
digitization but have yet to be reaccessioned in the UW-Madison Archives.

Research Areas and Projects: Prairie Chicken Investigations,
1930-1935
View digitized contents of this box. Materials relate to prairie chickens in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Prairie Chicken
Investigations were begun by Dr. A.O. Gross for the Wisconsin Conservation
Department in 1928. In 1930, F.J.W. Schmidt acted as Dr. Gross's assistant, then
took charge and was carried by WCD until May 1933, when he was appointed to a
research assistantship supported by the chair of game management at the University
of Wisconsin. On 8 Aug. 1935 Schmidt, one of AL's first Ph.D. candidates and an
ecologist of outstanding promise, was killed in a fire which also destroyed his
notes, photographs, and manuscripts, about 8 of which he was readying for
publication. Box 007 contains what remains of Schmidt's work, consisting mostly of early reports
and notes, and early versions of some of the papers, as well as a few manuscripts on
miscellaneous topics not directly related to the prairie chicken investigations. Folders 005 through 011 hold Schmidt's drafts, notes, and correspondence on a
variety of topics. Folders 012 through 019 hold Schmidt's correspondence and notes
covering selected subjects related to game birds, but no manuscripts.

chicken investigations (at first called the Lake States Banding Cooperative and
later renamed the Prairie Grouse Cooperative). AL's student F.N. Hamerstrom, Jr.,

Hamerstrom's materials can be found in Box 009.) During this time period much Wisconsin game bird banding was done through the

Materials in this series, most of which were originally in Mr. Leopold's personal files,
were deposited by various members of the Leopold family and by the UW Department of
Wildlife Ecology. The first nine boxes of the series pertain to publications, although only Boxes 001-002
contain actual published materials (reprints or clippings). Boxes 003-006 contain
correspondence and miscellaneous materials pertaining to publication of Mr. Leopold's
four books, copies of which are readily available. Correspondence and working papers for
the Report on a Game Survey of the North Central States and
Game Management may be found in the species and subject
files (9/25/10-4). In Boxes 007-009 are working papers, including correspondence, notes,
and drafts, for a number of Mr. Leopold's published articles, reprints of which may be
found in Boxes 001-002. Working papers relating to other published items may be found
scattered throughout the collection; an attempt has been made in the folder list to
identify them where they occur (see also Boxes 016-018 in this series.) Boxes 010-018 contain mostly unpublished materials, including drafts of Mr. Leopold's
proposed book on Southwestern game (Box 010); his state game survey reports (Boxes
010-011); working papers for research manuscripts which were not published (Boxes
012-013); digests, lectures, course materials, notes, and other miscellaneous items
(Boxes 013-015); manuscripts, mostly unpublished, which Mr. Leopold kept in his desk
(Boxes 016-017); and superseded drafts collected by Dr. Robert McCabe (Box 018). This series also includes three large folios: one contains a nearly complete set of the
Pine Cone , a game bulletin edited by Mr. Leopold and
others, 1915-1931; the second contains charts of bird song phenology data for a paper
Mr. Leopold intended to write; the third contains original illustrations by artist Byron
Jorns, who worked together with Leopold on a series of wildlife management features for
the Wisconsin Agriculturalist and Farmer . Mr. Leopold almost always wrote with pencil on yellow lined paper (PY). After finishing
an article or essay he would put it in his "cooling drawer" for several days or weeks,
then ask various friends or students for a critical reading, rework it, and have it
typed on yellow paper (TY) for further criticism and revision (TYR). A paper might go
through several typed yellow drafts before it was finally considered finished and the
order given, "Go to white" (TW). Even then it might be further revised (TWR). Exceptions
include a few original drafts written in ink on white paper (ink W) and a few final
drafts, prior to about 1928, typed on yellow paper.

bring this material together into a publishable manual. AL himself had hoped to
complete this project (see folder 008 in this box), but apparently his lack of
time convinced him to turn the work and parts of this notebook over to Wade.

View digitized contents of this box. : Holds unpublished manuscripts related to wildlife censuses in the Prairie du Sac
area and a bound volume of Leopold's "digests." From 1941 to 1944 AL and Paul
Errington attempted to collaborate on a paper analyzing the results of the Prairie
du Sac wildlife census, which dated back to 1929. There were probably four drafts
each by AL and Errington, alternating with each other. The final result was a
version published by Errington alone in Ecological
Monographs (January 1945), "Some contributions of a 15 year local study of
the northern bobwhite to a knowledge of population phenomena." Only AL's drafts are
in the UW-Madison Archives, along with some related correspondence. See also other

trip was sponsored by the Carl Schurz Memorial Foundation and the Oberlaender
Trust to study German methods of forestry and game management. The notes are on
various types and sizes of paper, mostly handwritten. Maps, reprints, and graphs
are also included. Subdivisions in the bound volume include: Addresses, Accounts,

Wildlife Ecology 118. Hickey took this course as a student of AL in 1943 and
taught it jointly with AL in 1948. The 1943 materials include handouts and
Hickey's notes on lectures. Copies of AL's own lecture notes for 1948 are
interfiled; many notes bear his own marks for revision and questions for oral
quizzes in class. See the Hickey papers, 9/25/11, for Hickey's notebooks of lectures in Wildlife

View digitized contents of this box. Contains some 200 unpublished manuscripts and fragments found in AL's desk file at
the time of his death. Some manuscripts contain ideas which he wanted to set down
for possible future use. The manuscripts span years from 1917 to 1948, though
several are undated. Portions of the material appeared in revised form in AL's
published work, including Round River . Also included
are articles, speeches, seminar papers, reports, essays, and fragments on the
diverse interests of a lifetime. After AL's death, these manuscripts were sent to Dr. A. Starker Leopold, who
inherited his father's library. On 18 Sept. 1967, Starker Leopold deposited the
entire corpus in the UW-Madison Archives. An attempt has been made to arrange the
manuscripts according to subject and chronology; a bibliography is included in the
box. Titles are self-explanatory (see below). Items indented were stapled or clipped with the items they follow. The numbers
associated with most of th eitems correspond with the numbered items in box 17.
