Series: 9/25/10-12: Student Course Materials
View digitized contents of this series. Materials in this series pertain to courses Aldo Leopold took as a student. He began
his schooling in Burlington, Iowa, then attended the Lawrenceville Preparatory School in
New Jersey, beginning in January 1904. From 1905-1908 he studied at Sheffield Scientific
School at Yale, earning a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in 1908. While still an
undergraduate, he began taking courses at the Yale Forest School, from which he earned a
Master of Forestry degree in 1909. The UW-Madison Archives collection includes class notes from AL's high school years,
primarily at Burlington High School, and several essay books from AL's time at
Lawrenceville (Box 001). See also Series 13: Additions to the Collection, Box 3, for
additional class notebooks from Leopold's years at Burlington High School. Boxes 002 and 003 contain course notes from AL's years at Yale Forest School. The notes
are handwritten on looseleaf pages and bound in black cardboard binders by course
number. Some of the books contain page numbers and indexes. These materials, deposited 5
August 1970 by the Leopold family, may be an important source for what was being taught
at Yale Forest School during a significant period in the history of American forestry.
See letter, S. A. Andrews to Luna B. Leopold, 11-16-56, in Box 002, for background on
the history of these materials. See also 9/25/10-6, Box 014 for papers AL prepared in connection with some of these
courses, and correspondence in 9/25-10-8 for letters written by AL during his school
years. Most of the notebooks in Box 001 are undated, but apparently were kept by AL during his
years (1901?-December 1903) at Burlington High School. Several items are from his time
(January 1904-June 1905) at the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey. Box 002 contains 10 field notebooks 5" x 7" in size; Box 003 contains 10 lab notebooks
8" x l0" in size, and one folder, which contains loose pages of notes and drawings
numbered 19-60. It appears to be the remnants of Leopold's notes for a course on forest
insect pests. Also present in Box 002 is a 1956 letter from Stuart Andrews of
Albuquerque to Luna Leopold in Washington, D. C., stating that he had found the Yale
materials in the basement of the house at 131 S. 14th Street in Albuquerque and was
forwarding them to Luna Leopold per instructions from Estella Leopold.
