Arnold Munkel (1918-2003) was a
mechanic and welder from Spring Grove, Minnesota. He was a dedicated documentarian of
Norwegian-American folk music from southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa. His recordings
are a mix of home, private event, public and festival performances. The collection also
includes local festival programs, Munkel's personal records of the performers and
instruments represented on the tapes, song books, and other materials. Several of the
recordings include announcements or introductions by Munkel, such as audiotape reel 23 (Box
4), on which Munkel relates an anecdote of his visit to Stonehenge during World War II.
Munkel's personal recordings and thorough documentation of these performances represent a
unique collection of Norwegian American folk music in the Upper Midwest. English .
