Abstract:
Arnold Munkel (1918-2003) was a mechanic and welder from Spring Grove, Minnesota. He was a dedicated documentarian of Norwegian-American folk music from southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa. His recordings are a mix of home, private event, public and festival performances. The collection also includes local festival programs, Munkel's personal records of the performers and instruments represented on the tapes, song books, and other materials. Several of the recordings include announcements or introductions by Munkel, such as audiotape reel 23 (Box 4), on which Munkel relates an anecdote of his visit to Stonehenge during World War II. Munkel's personal recordings and thorough documentation of these performances represent a unique collection of Norwegian American folk music in the Upper Midwest.

Organized into three series: I. Papers, II. Sound Recordings, III. Recording Equipment. Series I is further arranged into two subseries: 1, Manuscript materials, and subseries 2, Tape notes. Series II, SOund Recordings, is further arranged into two subseries: 1, Audiotape reels, and 2. Audiocassettes.

Biographical / Historical

Arnold "Charlie" M. Munkel (1918-2003) was born in Caledonia, Minn and lived most of his life just 13 miles away in Spring Grove, Minn. In 1941, Munkel was drafted into the US Army. He served in the 7th Armored Division as part of the European Campaign in WWII and won a Bronze Star Medal for his service in the war. On August 25, 1943 Munkel married Marion Klinge of Caledonia. Munkel worked as a mechanic and welder for the Houston County Highway Department for 28 years and was an active member of the Sons of Norway Valheim Lodge and the American Legion. He also served on the planning committee for Spring Grove's annual Syttende Mai celebration. An avid connoisseur of local music, Munkel was known for attending and recording live old-time and folk music performances in southeastern Minnesota and northeastern Iowa, including Spring Grove's Syttende Mai festivals and Decorah's annual NordicFest.

Scope and Contents

The collection is organized into three series. Series I, Manuscript Materials, is organized into 96 folders consisting of tape recording notes, festival programs, commercially produced sheet music and songbooks, homemade song books, family histories, festival records, correspondence, transcribed lyrics, recording lists, song lists, and memo books. Series II, Sound Recordings, is organized by format: audiotape reels, and audiocassettes. Five commercial audiocassettes are cataloged separately as part of Mills Music Library's audiocassette collection. Series III, Recording Equipment, consists of 3 reel-to-reel tape recorders and 2 audiocassette recorders.
