The Ranch was founded by Henry Hohenstein and Victor Hellman in 1964 under the
auspices of the David A. Hellman Foundation. It was created as an urban/rural
rehabilitation center of fifty-eight acres of farmland serving developmentally
disabled adolescents and adults in southeastern Wisconsin. The Ranch grew to include
multipurpose buildings, new programs, and farm animals.
In 1994 The Ranch changed its name to Ranch Community Services to better reflect its
expanded agency. Ranch Community Services manages homes and apartments throughout
Milwaukee, Waukesha, Washington, and Racine counties by providing a multi-team
approach to service. Services provided by the Ranch over the years included
residential and day support services, therapeutic horse riding, and a golf course.
