Biography/History

The Ranch was founded by Henry Hohenstein and Victor Hellman in 1964 under the auspices of the David A. Hellman Foundation. It was created as an urban/rural rehabilitation center of fifty-eight acres of farmland serving developmentally disabled adolescents and adults in southeastern Wisconsin. The Ranch grew to include multipurpose buildings, new programs, and farm animals.

In 1994 The Ranch changed its name to Ranch Community Services to better reflect its expanded agency. Ranch Community Services manages homes and apartments throughout Milwaukee, Waukesha, Washington, and Racine counties by providing a multi-team approach to service. Services provided by the Ranch over the years included residential and day support services, therapeutic horse riding, and a golf course.

Scope and Content Note

Ranch Community Services records consist largely of public relations materials, including newsclippings; Ranch Round-up and RCS Express newsletters; various other publications, brochures, and fliers; and photographs which mostly document activities. The collection also contains Wisconsin Motorsports Charities, Inc. Recognition Dinner programs. These fundraising dinners supported the Ranch.
