Subject files of John Solon, assistant chancellor from 1965-1974. Many aspects of the
campus community are documented, particularly Solon's involvement with faculty concerns,
student organizations, hiring procedures, buildings bought and sold by the campus, campus
development, and campus security.
The campus protection files consist of reports on campus theft, police services, police
training, security and fire equipment, Campus Protection Department's policies and
procedures, information about the hiring and qualifications of campus police, and
information about the growing unrest on campus during the late 1960s and early 1970s. These
records date from 1964-1971. Much of the correspondence is between John Solon and Al
Fiorita, director of campus services, and Phil La Porte, director of campus protection and
security.
Many files document the Physical Plant, including buying and selling of different
buildings, and improvements to existing buildings. A few of these include the Bolton
Hall-Union project, 1970; book stores, 1965-1969; the State Building Commission, 1968-1969;
the Campus Elementary School, 1967-1971; the Car Barn, Fleet Services, 1968-1970; the Civic
Center Campus, 1966-1973; the classroom sizes study, 1971; and the Downer Woods
Sub-Committee.
The collection also documents community involvement with the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee. These files include complaints, 1966-1970, the Community Programs
Center, and the records of the East Side Community Council, 1969-1970. Other files,
particularly those documenting campus building projects and campus protection include
letters from community members.
Many aspects of student affairs are documented in this collection. Many of these files
contain information about student unrest and protest on campus, and the reaction of more
conservative students, faculty, community members and the administration.
The files contain records on various committees, including the Assembly Committee on State
Affairs, Downer Woods Sub-Committee, Health and Safety Committee, Medical Steering
Committee, Milwaukee Organizing Committee, Student Conduct Hearing Committee, and
Student-Faculty Recreation Committee.
