John Solon first appeared in the Faculty and Staff Directory
in the 1965-1966 school year as the director of the Summer Session and assistant to the
chancellor. This was the first year that the assistant chancellor position appears. Prior to
that time, there was a chancellor, and vice-chancellor (though prior to 1965 these positions
were called provost and vice-provost). In the 1966-1967 school year, John Solon was
assistant to the chancellor; the director of the Summer Session was a separate position. In
the 1967-1968 school year, there were two assistant chancellors, plus an assistant to the
vice-chancellor, with administrative assistants for both the chancellor and vice-chancellor.
By the 1968-1969 school year, both assistant chancellor's had secretaries, as well as an
administrative assistant, the chancellor had three special assistants, and the
vice-chancellor had one.
In 1975 John Solon became the secretary of the university, and served on the Physical
Environment Faculty Committee, and the University Relations Faculty Committee. He continued
as secretary of the university until the end of the 1981-1982 school year. The 1982-1983
staff directory does not list his name.
