The Department of Dance was created in the fall of 1965, three years after the creation of
the School of Fine Arts. In 1982, the department merged with the Department of Theatre Arts
to form the Department of Theatre and Dance. Although the program was suspended between
1986-1989 because of loss of dedicated faculty lines and low enrollment, it was successfully
reactivated in 1989 and operated as an autonomous program within the larger department as of
1991. In 2003, the Faculty Senate voted to redepartmentalize the Department.
