Abstract:

Records consist of correspondence, faculty meeting minutes, curriculum guidelines, and programs from various dance performances. The chair's correspondence is primarily to the dean of the School of Fine Arts relating to curriculum changes, personnel requests, and other department activities. The faculty meeting minutes document course requirements, budget cuts, faculty appointments, unrestricted student evaluations of faculty, and upcoming student and faculty dance performances. The files also contain information on guest artists who performed with the Dance Department along with appearances by several nationally renowned dance companies. Other records in the collection include information on the development of the Milwaukee Ballet Company and its association with the School of Fine Arts.

The Department of Dance was created in the fall of 1965, three years after the creation of the School of Fine Arts. In 1982, the department merged with the Department of Theatre Arts to form the Department of Theatre and Dance. Although the program was suspended between 1986-1989 because of loss of dedicated faculty lines and low enrollment, it was successfully reactivated in 1989 and operated as an autonomous program within the larger department as of 1991. In 2003, the Faculty Senate voted to redepartmentalize the Department.

Acquisition Information

The collection originally consisted of five series of faculty minutes, correspondence, and subject files acquired before 1989. The department transferred additional materials to the Archives in October 2012 (accession 2012-026).

Web crawling is managed through the Internet Archive's Archive-It services. This series includes links to both the university's collection and the Internet Archive's public collection. Web records from UWM are collected on a semi-annual basis. Crawls of the UWM Website may be performed at more frequent intervals in cases of major events, significant additions or changes to the UWM Website or the websites of schools and colleges, etc. Social Media feeds are crawled on an as-requested basis.

Processing Information

Sandra J. Bartell reprocessed the collection at the Archives in August-September 1993. Molly Whiteside (supervised by Christel Maass) finished processing accession 2012-026 (boxes 3-4), started by an unknown individual, in June 2015. In February 2017 Ashlie Biddle transferred folders containing dance-specific records and a box of dance posters from accession 2015-009 to this collection. Brad Houston and Claire Dinkelman updated the finding aid in April and July 2017 to include information on the Web Series.
