Biography/History

TMER&T Co. was the antecedent of The Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Company (TMER&L) after it reorganized in 1938. TMER&L, and later TMER&T, provided streetcar service within the City of Milwaukee and interurban access between the city, the suburbs, and other small towns in the area, reaching as far as Madison and Green Bay. In 1951 the last of the interurban lines were closed down. In 1958 the last streetcar in Milwaukee ceased operation. Electric locomotives from the company would continue to be used at power plants in the area until the early 1970s. The Chicago & North Western Railroad got its start in 1859 and ended in 1995 when it was purchased by the Union Pacific Railroad. It provided rail service to varying degrees throughout Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Wyoming. The C&NW was one of the major railroads that provided service to Milwaukee.
