Biography/History
Max Ludwig Heim (1900-1971) was a professional photographer from Milwaukee,
Wisconsin. He married Caroline Hegyi in 1936. Heim worked for Brown & Rehbaum,
Inc., a local commercial photography studio that was located at 327 W. National
Ave.
Scope and Content Note
This collection contains 20 black and white 8” x 10” photographs of several different
buildings located on the corner of N. 3rd and W. State Street. The photographs were
taken on four separate dates: May 11 and 13, 1960 and March 12 and 16, 1961. In most
instances, the photographs on the later dates are taken from the same place and
angle as the earlier ones. Businesses in the photos include Sherkow Men’s Formal
Wear, David Wald Manufacturing Optician, Künstler’s Smoke Shop, Klode’s, Donges,
Rothe’s (Drew’s) Restaurant, Odd Lot Shoes, Lenrak’s Restaurant, Banner Pants, and
Urich Hardware. Some photographs include the J. Hinkel building, a National Historic
Building. Originally the John Hinkel Saloon and Restaurant and known as the “Central
Hall Restaurant”, it was built in 1877 for German immigrant John Hinkel, a former
foreman for the Best (Pabst) Brewing Company.
Arrangement of the Materials
The photographs are organized in pairs (same location and angle, earlier date
followed by later date) and placed in individual acid-free folders for preservation
purposes.
