Scope and Contents

The David J. Marcou Photograph of La Crosse, Wisconsin contains over 650 photographs of La Crosse, Wis., people, places, and events. The photographer has identified most of the photographs in the collection. His notes are either hand written on the backs of the photographs or identification information has been included on paper slips inserted in the photo sleeves.

Photographs that were donated in 2006 (Acc. No. 2006-9) have reference numbers on the reverse side. Two master lists are included which lists identification information for these photos. There are photographs listed on the master lists that are not in this collection.

Most photographs are 4" x 6" in size and are color and on glossy paper, although some larger and smaller photographs are included. The photographs have been grouped by subject and include art, bridges and the Mississippi River, buildings, celebrities, churches, events, libraries, miscellaneous, parks, people, residences, schools, sports, streets and alleys, and transportation.

Art photographs show La Crosse area sculptures. Bridges and the Mississippi River show the Cass and Cameron Street Bridges and two different views of the Mississippi River.

Buildings include many La Crosse businesses and industries.

Photographs of local celebrities include Archbishop Raymond Burke, Frank Devine, Jerilyn Dinsmoor, Bishop Frederick Freking, Ramona Gonzalez, Art Hebberd, Scott Horne, Dennis Marcou, Mayor John Medinger, Geri Parlin, Bishop John Paul, Marty Severson, Don Weber, Mayor Patrick Zielke, and John Zoerb. Six color photographs of Bishop, Jerome Listecki, of the Diocese of La Crosse, were placed in the La Crosse Public Library Picture File under the heading Portraits-Listecki, Jerome (Bishop).

Photographs of national and state celebrities include Marcus Allen, Barbara Bush, Jenna Bush, Mike Ditka, Elizabeth Dole, Governor Jim Doyle, Charlie Gibson, Bert Hardy, William Henderson, Joan Lunden, Tom Newbery, Jesse Owens, Michael Perry, Archbishop Robert Runcie, Bart Starr, Mother Teresa, and Governor Tommy Thompson. Two photographs of President George W. Bush from this collection have been placed in the La Crosse Public Library Picture File under the heading Celebrity Visits.

Cemetery photographs show Oak Grove Cemetery and the Catholic Cemetery.

Photographs of churches are a mixture of interior and exterior shots and include the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman, Christ Episcopal Church, the Church of Latter-Day Saints, First Church of Christ, Immanuel Lutheran, Mary of the Angels Chapel, St. James the Less, St. Paul's Lutheran, Sons of Abraham Synagogue, Trinity Lutheran, and Wesley United Methodist Church.

Photographs of general events are included as are photographs from the Aquinas High School Class of 1968 reunion, which took place in 1998. Other event photographs show the "Ecumenism Today" Conference held at Viterbo University (2005) and the 2005 election. Photos of the 2005 election include photographs of a rally for President George W. Bush on May 7, 2004, at Copeland Park. The majority of these photographs show rally participants rather than President Bush. Other photos from the 2004 election show La Crosse voters at two polling places (the La Crosse Public Library and the Carriage House) on November 2, 2004. Additional event photographs show La Crosse parades.

Library photographs from this collection have been placed in La Crosse Series 8 - Public Library and in Mss 13 - Friends of the La Crosse Public Library. Photocopies of the originals have been left in this collection with information about the location of each library photograph. The original library photographs include interior and exterior pictures from Main Library and North Community Library. Photographs of library book sales and the 25th anniversary of the library Archives are also included.

Some miscellaneous photographs are part of this collection. Park photographs show Burns Park, Cameron Park, Myrick Park, and Riverside Park.

Photographs of La Crosse area residents are grouped under the heading "people." Separate folders are included for photographs of local authors and photographs of the Marcou family.

Photographs of residences are exterior shots and include 326 S. 7th St., 237 S. 10th St., 1415 Cass St., 1720 Onalaska Ave., 2406 Onalaska Ave., 1720 Prospect St., and 1401 Wood St. Photographs of other La Crosse residences are included but are identified only by the block number and street as in "1400 block of Charles St."

School photographs show the exterior of Aquinas High School, Cathedral School, Hogan Administrative Center, Lincoln Middle School, Logan High School, Roosevelt School, St. James School, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and Viterbo University. One photograph of Logan High School Hmong students taken in the school library is also included.

Sport photographs show a mixture of grade school, high school, and professional teams. Streets and alleys photographs show a wide variety of La Crosse streets and alleys. A few transportation photographs are also included.
