Scope and Contents

The David J. Marcou Photograph of La Crosse, Wisconsin contains over 650 photographs of La Crosse, Wis., people, places, and events. The photographer has identified most of the photographs in the collection. His notes are either hand written on the backs of the photographs or identification information has been included on paper slips inserted in the photo sleeves.

Photographs that were donated in 2006 (Acc. No. 2006-9) have reference numbers on the reverse side. Two master lists are included which lists identification information for these photos. There are photographs listed on the master lists that are not in this collection.

Most photographs are 4" x 6" in size and are color and on glossy paper, although some larger and smaller photographs are included. The photographs have been grouped by subject and include art, bridges and the Mississippi River, buildings, celebrities, churches, events, libraries, miscellaneous, parks, people, residences, schools, sports, streets and alleys, and transportation.

Art photographs show La Crosse area sculptures. Bridges and the Mississippi River show the Cass and Cameron Street Bridges and two different views of the Mississippi River.

Buildings include many La Crosse businesses and industries.

Photographs of local celebrities include Archbishop Raymond Burke, Frank Devine, Jerilyn Dinsmoor, Bishop Frederick Freking, Ramona Gonzalez, Art Hebberd, Scott Horne, Dennis Marcou, Mayor John Medinger, Geri Parlin, Bishop John Paul, Marty Severson, Don Weber, Mayor Patrick Zielke, and John Zoerb. Six color photographs of Bishop, Jerome Listecki, of the Diocese of La Crosse, were placed in the La Crosse Public Library Picture File under the heading Portraits-Listecki, Jerome (Bishop).
