Biography/History

Charles F. Smith, Jr., Wausau attorney and veteran of World War II, served one term in the State Senate representing the 29th District. Born in Rhinelander, July 16, 1918, and educated at the University of Wisconsin, where he received B.A. (1941) and LL.B. (1948) degrees, Smith was active in county and local politics prior to his election in 1962. He was an alderman in Wausau and a Marathon county board member, 1959-1960, and county chairman of the Republican party, 1959-1962.

As Senator, Smith served on the highway; labor; taxation; insurance and banking; and urban problems committees. In 1962 he acted as Senate majority caucus secretary and was caucus chairman in 1965. He did not run for reelection in 1966.
