Biography/History

Charles F. Smith, Jr., Wausau attorney and veteran of World War II, served one term in the State Senate representing the 29th District. Born in Rhinelander, July 16, 1918, and educated at the University of Wisconsin, where he received B.A. (1941) and LL.B. (1948) degrees, Smith was active in county and local politics prior to his election in 1962. He was an alderman in Wausau and a Marathon county board member, 1959-1960, and county chairman of the Republican party, 1959-1962.

As Senator, Smith served on the highway; labor; taxation; insurance and banking; and urban problems committees. In 1962 he acted as Senate majority caucus secretary and was caucus chairman in 1965. He did not run for reelection in 1966.

Scope and Content Note

The collection does not contain a great deal of information about Smith's career nor about the deliberations of the Senate. A scattered selection of legislative bills and constituent correspondence, 1965-1966, is present. Also found are news releases and speeches, 1962-1966; reference materials, which primarily illustrate Smith's interest in highways and road construction; and campaign literature and memorabilia. The Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance Legislative Handbook for 1965 is a printed digest of pending Senate and Assembly bills, and laws, and a directory of legislators.
