Lynn Anderson Collection, circa 1901-circa 1987

Scope and Content Note

The collection does not focus on Lynn Anderson's work at Taliesin or her career as an architect but rather documents the work of architect Frank Lloyd Wright, mainly through photographic postcards. The collection also includes a few photographs that are not on postcard stock, some published materials, several reproductions of drawings, and a small amount of manuscript material. Although Anderson may have acquired some of this material during her time working for Wright, most likely the majority was purchased after she left Taliesin. The collection is organized into three series: POSTCARDS AND PHOTOGRAPHS, PUBLISHED WORKS, and DRAWINGS AND SPECIFICATIONS.

The POSTCARDS AND PHOTOGRAPHS series is divided into four sections: architecture, graphic designs, advertising, and people. The bulk of this series consists of photographic postcards of Wright-designed buildings, many of which were likely produced as souvenirs for the structure. Of particular note are the images of Wright's Wisconsin home, Taliesin, located near Spring Green, which document the building both before and after the 1914 fire and murders of Wright's family as well as the destruction and aftermath of that event. Other notable items in the series include a set of ACME Studios Trading Cards of Falling Water, postcards showing the Wright-designed Larkin building and its relationship to the rest of the Larkin Company complex, and two postcards of the destruction around the Imperial Hotel after the 1921 earthquake. In addition to buildings, the series also includes graphics designed by Wright, advertising for Wright-related events, and images of Wright and his family. Of the family imagery, the most important is a 1949 image of Wright with his daughter Catherine Dorothy Wright Baxter and her daughter, Wright's granddaughter, actress Anne Baxter, at Taliesin West taken just prior to Wright's death.

The PUBLICATIONS series includes magazine articles written by and about Wright discussing his architecture and his architectural philosophy. Included is a page from a 1901 Ladies Home Journal featuring a house designed by Wright for the magazine. Also in this series are two posters for events showcasing Wright and his architecture.

The DRAWINGS AND SPECIFICATIONS series includes the specifications and directories for the phone system at Taliesin West in Arizona and blueprints for the V.C. Morris Gift Shop and the Taliesin West Pavilion Stage lighting. Also included is a drawing of the Wisconsin River Terrace Restaurant near Spring Green, drawn by Lynn Anderson purportedly under the direction of Wright.
