International Harvester Company Print Advertising Proof Books, 1904-1945

Scope and Content Note

Print advertising proofs for the company's agricultural equipment and motor truck lines. The advertisements were published in U.S. and Canadian trade journals, farm papers, county weekly newspapers, national magazines, and the international farm press. The collection also includes some display advertising and draft advertising copy.

The proofs were originally mounted in bound volumes. The proofs have been removed from the volumes and placed in boxes and folders. The original volume and page order has been retained, however. The volumes are mostly arranged by year and thereafter by type of paper or publication the ads were intended for. These types of publications or advertising venues are usually arranged by farm, trade, class and technical, dealer, display, program and special. However, arrangement changed over the 40 years this collection covers. Some years are arranged by geographical area, type of implement; some years are arranged alphabetically by title of publication (especially grocer and trade class papers); later years are more likely to be arranged by other factors, such as truck, display, to dealers, centennial, Sahara truck, International, McCormick-Deering, and “miscellaneous.” Because the volume contains virtually identical advertisements that were published in several different publications, many of the actual advertisements themselves are duplicates.

Note: There are no volumes 43, 81, 109-113, or 133.
