During the late 1960s a number of factors lead to significant institutional reevaluation of
student rights and student participation in decision making on the University of Wisconsin
campus. At the same time (1967 - 1975), Philip G. Altbach held an associate professorship in
the Department of Educational Policy Studies and conducted a seminar (Educational Policy
Studies 638) on relevant university policies. Much of the work his students returned over
those years was related to the changing relationship of students to university decision
making and the crisis presented by intensified student activism in that period. The papers
in this collection were selected by Altbach to represent the reflections of his students on
the educational environment of the University of Wisconsin and at other institutions around
the state.
