Annette E. Scherbert Aldermanic Records, 1981-2002

Biography/History

Annette E. Scherbert was elected as Milwaukee’s 11th District alderwoman in 1984. In the early 1960s she was a grade school teacher at Walt Whitman Elementary School in Milwaukee. During her time teaching, she had a student named Joe Dudzik who eventually succeeded her as alderman in the 11th district. In 1994, she and other common council members blocked a proposed Indian Council for the Elderly senior housing project. This initiated a lawsuit by the U.S. Justice Department, costing the City of Milwaukee about $750,000 to settle. Scherbert retired from her position in early in 2001 for health reasons and endorsed Dudzik as her successor. Scherbert passed away in 2015.
