Call Number: Series 180
Abstract: Citizen petitions, remonstrances, and memorials submitted to the Senate and Assembly legislatures of the Wisconsin Territory and later the State of Wisconsin. Citizen petitions provide evidence about the role citizens played in shaping Wisconsin’s government, infrastructure, and public institutions. Early petitions focus on the use of land and water; the establishment of schools and institutions; and social issues like divorce, temperance, slavery, and treatment of Native Americans. Records for 1939-2007 consist of petition jackets that summarize the petition and indicate the number of signatures. For each petition, one sample is included. Many petitions are missing, especially for later Assembly sessions.
