In the mid-1960s the public's fascination with the media and television led to an increase
in popularity of all mediums of communication. As a result, more students entered the field,
which at the time was divided into sub-areas such as journalism and broadcasting. Members of
UWM's faculty, led by Drs. Ken Johnson and William Stroud, and other key figures, worked to
develop a Dept. of Mass Communication, featuring both undergraduate and graduate courses. In
2000, the name of the department was officially changed to Journalism and Mass
Communication.
