Abstract:

Records of the UW-Milwaukee Dept. of Mass Communication, which offered course sequences in journalism, radio-television, and mass communication. The majority of the collection consists of minutes from all-department meetings, faculty meetings, and executive committee meetings. Also included are administrative files from the early years of the department and copies of two of the department's newsletters, The Scoop and The Mass Comm Reporter.

In the mid-1960s the public's fascination with the media and television led to an increase in popularity of all mediums of communication. As a result, more students entered the field, which at the time was divided into sub-areas such as journalism and broadcasting. Members of UWM's faculty, led by Drs. Ken Johnson and William Stroud, and other key figures, worked to develop a Dept. of Mass Communication, featuring both undergraduate and graduate courses. In 2000, the name of the department was officially changed to Journalism and Mass Communication.

Acquisition Information

The Dept. of Mass Communication transferred the collection to the Archives in February 1997 (accession 1996-031). The department transferred additional materials (accession 2008-006) in 2008.
