Procter & Gamble Television Script Collection, 1955-1980

Provenance

It is likely this collection was physically part of the script libraries of the two advertising agencies, Benton and Bowles and Compton Advertising Agency, which were the producing agencies for Procter & Gamble programming. When the scripts were transferred to Procter & Gamble for storage, some scripts for other programs and some other types of production information other than scripts were inadvertently included.

In 1990 Procter & Gamble began distributing its files of soap opera scripts to archival institutions with relevant collections, and it selected the Mass Communications History Center of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin as the depository for the As The World Turns and The Guiding Light, because SHSW already held many earlier radio and television scripts for those programs as part of the papers of Irna Phillips, the writer of many radio and television soap operas.

When these scripts (originally about 200 cubic feet) arrived at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin the collection was found to include not only television scripts for those two programs but also scripts for The Rifleman and Make Room for Daddy: The Danny Thomas Show and production files for As the World Turns and The Guiding Light that supplemented the scripts.
