Abstract:
Variant scripts for several television programs produced by Procter & Gamble Productions, a subsidiary of Procter & Gamble, including soap operas, The Guiding Light (1958-1979) and As the World Turns (1956-1962, 1965, 1971, 1973-1979), as well as television shows, The Danny Thomas Show (1959-1960; previously titled Make Room for Daddy) and The Rifleman (1958-1959). Most of the scripts are mimeographed air scripts including scripts for commercials. Many are annotated to indicate timing and dialogue changes. Also included are some production records including files from 1958 to 1975 of Lucy Ferri Rittenberg of the Compton Advertising Agency, who served as production executive for The Guiding Light, and files from 1955 to 1957 of Charles Fisher, the account executive at Benton and Bowles who produced As the World Turns. Several of The Rifleman scripts were written by Sam Peckinpah and by Bruce Geller.

Biography/History

Beginning with the 1949 broadcast of Fashions on Parade, Procter & Gamble emerged as one of the first national companies to adapt to the advertising opportunities offered by television. Convinced that Procter & Gamble should take the lead in the development of television programs, in that year Procter & Gamble also organized a subsidiary company, Procter & Gamble Productions, Inc., to produce and acquire radio, television, and film programs and entertainments. Shortly thereafter Fireside Theatre, its first nighttime dramatic program, went into production and within a few years Procter & Gamble was producing many programs--westerns, adventures, situation comedies, game shows, children's programs, and variety specials--and more footage of filmed entertainment than any major movie studio.

All of these were nighttime productions, but Procter & Gamble gradually turned to daytime television, eventually becoming primarily identified in the public mind with the daytime soap opera genre. Search For Tomorrow, which became the longest-running program on American network television, was its first success. This was followed by the adaption for television of radio's Guiding Light which also went on to set broadcast records. Introduction of As the World Turns and The Edge of Night marked the transition to a thirty-minute format.

Provenance

It is likely this collection was physically part of the script libraries of the two advertising agencies, Benton and Bowles and Compton Advertising Agency, which were the producing agencies for Procter & Gamble programming. When the scripts were transferred to Procter & Gamble for storage, some scripts for other programs and some other types of production information other than scripts were inadvertently included.

In 1990 Procter & Gamble began distributing its files of soap opera scripts to archival institutions with relevant collections, and it selected the Mass Communications History Center of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin as the depository for the As The World Turns and The Guiding Light, because SHSW already held many earlier radio and television scripts for those programs as part of the papers of Irna Phillips, the writer of many radio and television soap operas.

When these scripts (originally about 200 cubic feet) arrived at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin the collection was found to include not only television scripts for those two programs but also scripts for The Rifleman and Make Room for Daddy: The Danny Thomas Show and production files for As the World Turns and The Guiding Light that supplemented the scripts.

Arrangement of the Materials

This collection was received in multiple parts from the donor(s) and is organized into 2 major parts. These materials have not been physically interfiled and researchers might need to consult more than one part to locate similar materials.

Scope and Content Note

The scripts for The Guiding Light and As the World Turns were microfilmed in 1992 and 1993 with funding provided by Procter & Gamble, after which the originals were destroyed. The other material relating to these programs and the scripts for Make Room for Daddy and The Rifleman were not filmed; they are available only on paper.

The soap opera scripts generally consist of mimeographed air scripts, together with scripts for commercials prepared by the advertising agencies, all of which are arranged alphabetically by program title and then chronologically by broadcast date. Many of the scripts are annotated to indicate timing and dialogue changes during rehearsal. For some periods (especially the early As the World Turns materials) the documentation present includes typed drafts with extensive annotations. Some later scripts are preceded by summaries. A few photographs found with the soap opera files have been separated to the WCFTR Television Title File.

Among the most useful of the supplementary materials are the files, 1955-1957, of Charles Fisher, the account executive at Benton and Bowles who served as producer for As the World Turns. His files include considerable routine information concerning detailed management of the program and its commercials, but there is also some policy-level correspondence with Irna Phillips, other advertising and production personnel, and CBS. Also present is some correspondence of Ralph S. Butler Jr., apparently Fisher's predecessor, and some files concerning other advertising accounts.

The Guiding Light is similarly represented by the files, 1956-1975, of Lucy Ferri Rittenberg, who was executive producer at Compton Advertising. Although few files provide documentation covering the full period of her oversight of the program, they do contain some useful insights into soap opera management. Among her records are narrative production reports from the 1970s, detailed contract information, lists indicating the appearance of minorities on the program during the 1970s, and the impact of several strikes on the production.

The scripts for The Rifleman and Make Room for Daddy consist of variant mimeographed scripts, and they document only a few of the seasons that those programs were aired. Notable among The Rifleman scripts are several written by Sam Peckinpah and Bruce Geller.
