Grover G. Huebner Papers, 1922-1955

Biography/History

Grover G. Huebner was born in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, on November 13, 1884. In 1905 he received an A.B. degree from the University of Wisconsin and in 1906 an A.M. In 1908, the University of Pennsylvania awarded him a Ph.D.

That same year he became an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Finance and Commerce. Eventually, Huebner became a full professor of transportation and commerce at Wharton and chairman of the Marketing and Foreign Commerce Department. He retired from academic life in the late 1950s.

In the second decade of this century, a number of federal economic commissions utilized his abilities. Between 1911 and 1918, Huebner worked for the Isthmian Canal Commission, the U.S. Maritime Commission, the U.S. Trade Board, and the Federal Trade Commission.

He produced many books in the field of transportation and commerce. Huebner's first book, Railroad Traffic Rates, appeared in 1911, and after that year his other works, the 1926 Railroad Freight Service and the 1930 Foreign Trade (which came out in a new edition in 1942) are noteworthy.
