Biography/History

Grover G. Huebner was born in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, on November 13, 1884. In 1905 he received an A.B. degree from the University of Wisconsin and in 1906 an A.M. In 1908, the University of Pennsylvania awarded him a Ph.D.

That same year he became an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Finance and Commerce. Eventually, Huebner became a full professor of transportation and commerce at Wharton and chairman of the Marketing and Foreign Commerce Department. He retired from academic life in the late 1950s.

In the second decade of this century, a number of federal economic commissions utilized his abilities. Between 1911 and 1918, Huebner worked for the Isthmian Canal Commission, the U.S. Maritime Commission, the U.S. Trade Board, and the Federal Trade Commission.

He produced many books in the field of transportation and commerce. Huebner's first book, Railroad Traffic Rates, appeared in 1911, and after that year his other works, the 1926 Railroad Freight Service and the 1930 Foreign Trade (which came out in a new edition in 1942) are noteworthy.

This biographical material was compiled mainly from Who's Who in America, volume XXVII (1952-1953).

Scope and Content Note

The Huebner collection consists mainly of annotated manuscript copies of only a few of Huebner's many published works. There are the manuscripts for his survey and projections concerning the Panama Canal (1936) and his survey of foreign trade and the U.S. Merchant Marine (1937?). In addition to the annotated manuscript copies of his studies of the railroad freight service (1925-1926) and of U.S. foreign trade (1952?), the galley proofs are also filed with the papers. Some miscellaneous manuscript fragments are arranged in a separate folder.

For the period 1951 to 1955, the papers include some class syllabi and a few examinations used in Huebner's classes at the Wharton School of Finance. The syllabi outline a number of graduate courses he gave in marketing and commerce. There is one Master of Business Administration examination, and there are several final examinations for different courses.

A large portion of his published “Traffic Lessons” are included in this collection. These appeared in a 52-part series in the 1922-1923 issues of the periodical The Traffic World. More than half of the lessons were saved with Huebner's papers. These lessons were intended to introduce the transportation world to the railway system of the 1920s in the United States. They were reprinted by the periodical to be distributed separately; almost all copies in these papers come from the reprinted series.

None of Huebner's personal papers are included in this collection. A profusion of lecture notes -- fragmentary, disorganized, and in very poor condition -- were offered back to the donor, at his request.
