Scope and Content Note

The General Record books document all aspects of town business from its creation in 1849. Information includes proceedings of the annual town meetings and meetings of the town board; names of town officers, office held, and tenure; bonds and oaths of office; apportionment of school funds; financial reports of the town board; and records of funds in account with the town treasurer. Volume 1, page 199 contains the proceedings of a special meeting held on June 15, 1861 recording the townspeople's reaction to the outbreak of the Civil War.

The Account books are a record of receipts and disbursements primarily for the town's Poor Fund, School Fund, Highway Fund, Library Fund, and Contingency Fund. Receipt information includes date, source, and amount. Disbursement information includes date, order number, recipient, and amount. Entries in Volume 12 are chronological; entries in Volume 13 are by year and thereunder by type of fund.

The Clerk's record of general and town elections including inspector's oaths, poll lists, certified statements of election returns, and certificates of election for town offices including lists of voters at each election, statements of election results, oaths of election inspectors, and certificates of election. Volumes 14, 16, and 18 are for spring elections for town offices and Volumes 15 and 17 are for the fall elections for federal, state, and county offices.

Dockets recording actions taken in civil and criminal cases brought before the Justice of the Peace indicating the names of the plaintiff and defendant, and in some cases that of their attorneys, the complaint entered, dates of various actions and proceedings, court costs, and in some instances, a short summary of the case and verdict given. Entries are chronological. Only Volume 21 has a name index to the parties.

The highway record book contains a register of overseers of highways (1869-1873) listing name of overseer, road district he represents, and dates of election and expiration of term; copies of all proceedings and orders of the town board relating to laying out, vacating, and taxing for highways (1868-1901); and a highway tax list (1869-1871) showing names of property owners, legal description of their land, valuation of their real and personal property, and tax levy for road purposes.
