The Women in Geography Project consists of 59 taped interviews conducted by Dr. Janice Monk, with women geographers across a broad spectrum of ages, academic status, affiliations, and experiences. They represent a critical chronicle of the significant and under-appreciated role of women in the development of academic geography in the United States. Dr. Monk's publications based upon these interviews provide historical and contextual dimensions to women's contributions to geographic scholarship, and particularly to issues of respect and inclusion.

The collection contains audio cassettes and transcripts of the interviews. Most subjects have both audio recordings and transcripts, but a few only contain one or the other. Some of the files also contain additional biographical information such as obituaries, résumés, memoirs, and photographs.

The files are organized alphabetically by personal name or by subject, then chronologically.

Access Restrictions

Some interviews have restrictions on them; please see the release forms (box 3, folder 6) for details. There are no access restrictions on the rest of the materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law.

Mamie Anderzhon, Myrna Breibart, Catherine Enderton, Beth Hobbs, Helen Smith, and Georgia Zannaras did not sign release forms, so they remain holders of copyright.

Acquisition Information

Janice Monk donated the collection to the American Geographical Society Library in October 2014.

Processing Information

Norman Stewart processed the collection which was originally placed in with the Association of American Geographers Records (AGSL Mss 23). Since then, the AGSL processed this as a separate manuscript collection.
