BACKGROUND OF THE NATIONAL FARMERS UNION
: Begun in Wisconsin in 1920's; able to absorb or cooperate with other organizations such as the Farmers Alliance, Non-Partisan League and the Society of Equity. Social and educational organization, with township units, not all of which survived. Unique in being “champion of the small farmer,” which both hindered and helped the organization.
