Western Wisconsin Schoolmasters Club Records, 1922-1957

Biography/History

In 1922, Everett L. Walters, director of the division for preparing high school teachers at La Crosse State Normal School, felt that in view of the changing needs of teachers in the schools there should be some definite contact between the schools and school administrators in the area around La Crosse. On November 11, 1922, he sent a letter to the principals and superintendents in the area inviting them to meet the following month to discuss this idea. And so on December 8, 1922, the Principals Club of Western Wisconsin was formed. At a meeting on March 15, 1923, a constitution and by-laws were adopted and the group changed its name to the Western Wisconsin Schoolmasters Club.

The purpose of the club, as set forth in the constitution, is: “To further the cooperation of its members in solving their common educational problems and to promote the spirit of professionalism and fellowship among the school men of this district.” Membership is composed of high school principals, supervising principals, or superintendents throughout the district surrounding La Crosse which includes the counties of Buffalo, Trempealeau, Jackson, La Crosse, Monroe, Juneau, Richland, and Crawford. The group devotes its time and energy to the study of practical problems and projects of particular interest to its members--for example, the study of remedial reading, high school failures and drop-outs, and extra-curricular activities.
