Henry Allen Cooper Papers, 1801-1934

Biography/History

In 1851, when Henry Allen Cooper as one year of age, his parents moved from Walworth County, Wisconsin to Burlington, Racine County, Wisconsin. He attended the local school and was later graduated from the academic and law courses of Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. In 1880 he was elected district attorney of Racine County and from the following January until the end of his life made his home in the city of Racine.

Cooper was elected to Congress in 1892 and, with the exception of one term, 1919-1921, served the First District continuously until his death in 1931, a total of thirty-six years.
