Wisconsin Constitutional Convention Biographical Information, 1838-1899

Scope and Content Note

Letters and biographical information on members of the two constitutional conventions, written in response to requests for information by H[orace] A. Tenney and David Atwood in 1878 and by officials of the Historical Society at various times. The material consists of a miscellany of letters written by the members themselves, their relatives, and friends, as well as informal sketches, newspaper clippings, and information filled in on printed forms. These papers were used as the basis for the biographical sketches in Milo Quaife's The Convention of 1846 and The Attainment of Statehood and by Florence E. Baker in Wisconsin Historical Society Proceedings, 1898, pp. 150-159.

Included are a number of letters, most of which were written at or near the time of the convention but which do not deal directly with biographical information. These autograph letters are by: David Agry, James Biggs, Charles E. Browne, George W. Brownell, Charles Burchard, Squire S. Case, Alfred Castleman, Albert G. Cole, Charles Dunn, Garrett M. Fitzgerald, Jonas Folts, Nathaniel F. Hyer, Andrew B. Jackson, Stodderd Judd, Chauncey Kellogg, Samuel W. Lyman, David Noggle, William Richardson, George Scagel, Marshall M. Strong, and Joseph Ward.
