Subseries: Department Files, 1927-19427 boxes (6.2 cubic feet) and microfilm (35 mm) Integrated files from many offices at NBC's New York headquarters, primarily consisting of internal memoranda, correspondence, newsclippings, reports, minutes, charts, financial data, blueprints, photographs, and related items. The files are arranged first by year (1927-1931 is treated as a single unit) and then by department. It should be noted that documentation consists of material both by and about most departments. Under many headings there are files for divisions and prominent personnel. There are also separate files for NBC presidents Richard C. Patterson, Lenox Lohr, and Niles Trammell. Though far from complete, the material is of high quality. Many of the memos and reports are quite detailed and often reveal policy decisions and implementation. Documentation is particularly impressive for the program department. Located here is material on the development of educational and children's programs, the growth of international broadcasting, the handling of commercial sponsorship, the disposition of program ideas and the coverage of news and special events. There are also significant files for NBC's Artists Service and for the continuity acceptance, general services, sales, engineering, station relations, publicity, and legal departments. Files for division and station operations (especially for Chicago, Hollywood, and San Francisco) and for the foreign offices in England and on the continent, are of considerable interest. The former indicate quite well the changing relationship between New York and the division offices as those offices sought greater autonomy. The latter provide a great deal of information on NBC activities overseas through NBC's representatives Fred Bate and Max Jordan. These files are especially interesting for NBC's response to the political and military situation of the late 1930s and early 1940s. (Of special note in the files for 1940 and 1941 are copies of letters from Paul Archinard to John Royal regarding the fall of France.) The foreign office files also document the rise of newscating, interest in European television experimentation, and relations with the BBC. Concern about government broadcasting regulations and competition with CBS in domestic and foreign operations is evident throughout. Files for Frank Russell, vice-president in Washington, D.C., are the most substantial regarding the FCC and federal legislation; the files for sales, programming, division and station operations, and the foreign offices best reflect competition with CBS. Use of electrical transcriptions, construction of studios, music rights, and the relationship between the Red and Blue Networks are documented in many areas of the files. For several departments there are memos and reports which detail their history and operations. A letter from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Lenox Lohr (July 22, 1937) may be found in the files for NBC's Washington, D.C., studios. In addition to those already mentioned, some NBC executives and personnel represented here are James Rowland Angell, Bertha Brainard, Samuel Chotzinoff, John Elwood, George Engels, Don E. Gilman, O. B. Hanson, William S. Hedges, Edgar Kobak, Frank E. Mason, Joseph V. McConnell, Clarence Menser, William Burke Miller, Frank E. Mullen, John F. Royal, A. A. Schecter, Sidney Strotz, Lewis Titterton, Roy C. Witmer, and Mark Woods. The oversize materials with the department fils are only available on microfilm.
