Iva Louise Hartman Papers, 1928-1974

Scope and Content Note

The greater portion of the collection consists of administrative files of the Pinehurst sanatorium or relates to the activities of professional organizations. There is little of a personal nature aside from some general correspondence with friends and ex-patients, and a few scrapbook items. The many photographs of Pinehurst and its staff, accessioned with the papers, have been separated to the Visual Materials section.

The Pinehurst administration material makes up about one third of the collection. Although the files are incomplete and parts of them are in poor physical condition, what is there suffices to show Miss Hartman's meticulous attention to the administration of the sanatorium and the details and complexities of its operation.

Most of the remainder of the collection is concerned with professional and tuberculosis associations. This material clearly presents the hierarchy and activities of national, state, and local tuberculosis associations during Hartman's career, as well as her activities and affiliations with professional medical organizations.
