Series: Part 2, 1916-1980
Scope and Content Note

The Additions which constitute Part 2 have been organized in nine subseries similar to those in Part 1: Biographical File; General Correspondence and Subject File; General Production File; Productions with Which Alan Schneider Was Involved; Materials Submitted to Alan Schneider; Theater Organizations, Groups, and Meetings; Colleges and Universities; Writings and Speeches; and Previously Restricted Files. A brief partial index to correspondents in several of the subseries of this part comprises Appendix II.

In Part 2, the boxes are numbered in one sequence from Box 96 through Box 147. Thus it is unnecessary to specify the subseries number when requesting files.

Subseries: Subseries 1: Biographical File
Scope and Content Note: The “Biographical File” includes agreements, calendars, diaries, correspondence, financial records, notes, notebooks, passports, certificates, clippings, miscellany, and assorted subject files. Of particular interest is a diary Schneider kept from December 1941 to February 1943. The diary focuses on the out-break and major events of World War II and contains Schneider's impressions and attitudes on topics such as the role of creative arts and education in wartime; the academic attitude toward the war; the American public's attitude toward Germany, Japan, and Russia; and his view of isolationism. Also included in this file are notes from an Advanced Directing class taught by Walter Kerr at Catholic University.

Subseries: Subseries 4: Productions With Which Alan Schneider Involved
Scope and Content Note

“Productions with Which Alan Schneider Was Involved” consists of production files which may include correspondence; scripts; clippings; reviews; playbills; interpretive and general notes; messages; lyrics; plots and plans; reports; box office statements; contracts; tape recordings; miscellany; and research, casting, location and set, financial, and legal files. The amount of documentation varies with each production. Arrangement is alphabetical by title with the specific format (e.g., theater or motion pictures) listed with the known production information. Arrangement within productions is alphabetical by folder title with script-related materials, such as revisions and variant scripts, completing the file. Researchers should note that typically the “director's script” is heavily annotated and that, occasionally, pre-Broadway tour production materials will be intermixed with the final New York production files.

Schneider directed most of these works, although a few plays in which he worked as an actor early in his career are also represented. In addition this series includes both unproduced works and produced works for which Schneider received neither directing nor acting credit. Several of these latter productions were done during Schneider's tenure as Associate Director at Arena Stage. In this capacity he often became involved in all of the season's plays. A subjective judgment was made as to whether his participation in a particular production was sufficient to warrant inclusion of the file in this series or the next. Usually, if a file included casting or some general notes which indicated Schneider's involvement, it was placed in this series whether or not he received final directing credit.

The theatrical productions include Broadway, off-Broadway, regional, and university works, Appropriate production information is cited in the contents list below. The files for I Never Sang for My Father, Inquest, You Know I Can't Hear You When the Water's Running, and Zalmen or The Madness of God are particularly extensive as are those for the unproduced motion picture Piano Sport and the television production of Zalmen or The Madness of God. Also of interest is material in the Les Blancs file pertaining to a Memorial Tribute Program to Lorraine Hansberry.

Subseries: Subseries 5: Materials Submitted to Alan Schneider
Scope and Content Note: The “Materials Submitted To Alan Schneider” includes motion pictures, theater, television, radio, literature, and poetry submissions and is organized by genre with productions or titles listed alphabetically thereunder. The file consists primarily of scripts, treatments, and outlines although correspondence, clippings, prospectus, and miscellany are also included. Often the scripts will contain brief, cryptic notes by Schneider in which he evaluates the item. Those scripts including more substantive comments by Schneider are noted below. A few of the plays in this series Schneider had intended to direct, but, for whatever reason, the project ended at a very early phase. Among the scripts are those for motion pictures such as Fahrenheit 451, John and Mary, Little Big Man, and The Sterile Cuckoo. Theater works include Benjamin by Loring Mandel, Echoes by N. Richard Nash, Everything in the Garden by Edward Albee, Sticks and Bones by David Rabe, We'll All be There by Dale Wasserman, and What Use Are Flowers? by Lorraine Hansberry.

Subseries: Subseries 6: Theater Organizations, Groups, and Meetings
Scope and Content Note

“Theater Organizations, Groups, and Meetings” consist of subject files for various professional organizations; theater groups, conventions, and festivals; and foundations with which Schneider was involved or had contact. Among these are foundations such as the Rockefeller, Ford, and Woodrow Wilson foundations; theater groups such as The Acting Company, the Juilliard School, and Theatre Communications Group; theaters such as the Alley Theatre, Catholic University Theatre, Goodman Theatre, and Guthrie Theatre; and professional organizations such as the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers. Those groups or meetings which had only small files (usually a single letter or two) have been combined and placed in the files labeled “Miscellaneous Theaters and Organizations.”

The most extensive files are those relating to the Ithaca Festival Theatre, a project initially conceived as a cultural, educational, and recreational facility for all the performing arts (theater, music, dance, films, and the visual arts). The original concept of the Festival Theatre, which was located in Ithaca, New York -- home of Cornell University and Ithaca College -- was to provide a source of cultural opportunity when the university and college were not in session. Schneider served as the Artistic Director of the Festival Theatre for several of its planning years, although he ultimately resigned when constant delays postponed its opening and the concept of the theater's scope changed. Nevertheless, the files provide insights into many phases of the Theatre's planning and design and documents various fund-raising projects organized to solicit financial support from the local community, private foundations, and local and state governments, efforts to design a theater and grounds conducive to artistic expressions, and plans for the types of plays and repertory company needed to execute the Theatre's goals.

Also included are files relating to the Ford and Rockefeller foundations for which Schneider worked as a consultant. Included with the Rockefeller Foundation files are confidential memoranda from Schneider in which he forthrightly critiques the overall programs and performances of various theater groups and companies and makes recommendations regarding their grants. In addition to documenting Schneider's activities in the National Endowment for the Arts, these files also reveal the role of the federal government in assisting theater in America. Finally, a large file exists for the Arena Stage where Schneider directed many productions throughout his career and served as Associate Director.
