Truman Saunders Papers, 1836-1893

Biography/History

Truman Saunders, the son of Charles and Polly Saunders, married Phoebe Wilcox in 1844. Saunders taught school in Shiloh, New Jersey for two years, and in 1846 was ordained a deacon by the Baptist church of Berlin, New York. Besides being a deacon and teacher, Saunders was also a merchant and a farmer. In 1854 he moved his family to West Halleck, Illinois. In 1879 he moved his family again, this time to Milton, Wisconsin. Truman Saunders remained in Milton until his death in 1894.

Truman and Phoebe Saunders had six children; Ellen, Truman W., Charles, Edward, John, and Haldane.
