Scope and Content Note

This accession consists of all the papers remaining in N. Richard Nash's house in Cornwall Bridge, Connecticut, and his New York City apartment on his death in 2000. Almost all of it consists of files relating to his writing projects: drafts of stage plays, screenplays, novels and other works, with a small number of research and production files (casting files, budgets, and prompt scripts).

The project files are arranged alphabetically by title, then chronologically under each title. However, both these methods of arrangement require comment.

First, most of Mr. Nash's projects went through a number of different titles. The arrangement attempts to group together all materials relating to the same subject matter (usually the same basic plot), irrespective of the actual titles on the drafts. One important exception is that materials relating to The Rainmaker, television play and stage play, are filed separately from those relating to 110 in the Shade; the latter is an adaptation of the former as a musical, but they were both produced, and are so distinct it seemed preferable to keep them separate.

Second, the same plot material is often used for different forms: stage play, screenplay, and novel. These forms have generally been arranged separately under the project title.

Third, the project title used in the arrangement is, in the case of produced and/or published plays and screenplays, and published novels, the title of production or publication; if a project was publicly presented under more than one title, the last American production or publication title is used. Unproduced and unpublished titles are grouped under what seems to be the latest title. Whenever a draft has a title, this is given (in inverted commas) at the beginning of the entry for that folder. A concordance at the end of this scope and content note links all titles used to the project title under which related materials may be found in this accession.

Fourth, many of the drafts bear an authorial name other than N. Richard Nash. In some cases this is because they were written by someone else -- writings of members of his family, or texts submitted to him by their authors for comment, usually in connection with a writing workshop conducted by Mr. Nash. Writings by others are separately arranged at the end of the accession (unless these are writings relating directly to a project of Mr. Nash's, in which case they are grouped with the other materials relating to that project). However, in many cases these other names are pseudonyms of Mr. Nash's. In most, one or two drafts (or even one or two alternate title pages) have the pseudonym, and the latest versions usually bear the Nash name. Such pseudonyms are: Joram Cutler, Richard Karlen, David E. Nicholson, Matthew Parker, William Payne, and John Westover. A few items are presented under Mr. Nash's original name: Richard Nusbaum. One pseudonym is much more developed: John Roc, who has a fictional biography (for use on book jackets and in playbills), his own Library of Congress Name Authority entry, and Mr. Nash carefully preserved the secret of his identity until the publication of the Selected Plays in 1996, which includes a Roc title and formally states that this is a pseudonym for N. Richard Nash.

Fifth, the chronological arrangement within the materials for a particular project is tentative. It is based on the dates which are written or typed on many of the drafts, the numbering (usually by letters) of variant drafts, and internal evidence, for example, the appearance in the typed part of a draft of material in hand-written emendations on another, and presumably therefore earlier, draft. None of these dating methods is entirely reliable, so the chronological sequence should be treated with caution. See the Title Concordance in the Appendix.
