U.S. Mss 147AN
|
Series: Part 1: (U.S. Mss 147AN) Original Collection, 1963-19736.0 c.f. (15 archives boxes) The original collection has been arranged into three series: BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION, BOOKS-PUBLISHED, and BOOKS-UNPUBLISHED. The first series, BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION, is very brief, containing only one folder with autobiographical notes written by McBride. The bulk of Part 1 of the collection is contained in the second series, BOOKS-PUBLISHED. The material is segregated by each individual book and then arranged chronologically according to publishing date. The material provides excellent documentation of the logical fashion in which McBride prepared his books. Most of the material consists of the rough drafts of individual chapters, though some research material is also included. There is a small amount of correspondence, mostly between McBride and his publishers. The final series, BOOKS-UNPUBLISHED, contains the correspondence, rough drafts, and research materials used in his early book, The Language of Baseball. Documentation on this work is also found in the files on the published book High and Inside in Part 2 of this register.

U.S. Mss 147AN

Series: Part 2 (U.S. Mss 147AN, Audio 1036A): 1985 Additions, 1960-198335.6 c.f. (90 archives boxes) and 66 tape recordings The 1985 Additions to the Joseph McBride Papers primarily document his career as a critic and writer in film, television, and theater during the years 1977-1982, and consist of script drafts and revisions, source material, storyboards, notes, correspondence, and interview transcripts, from more than 90 projects. Also, included are drafts from a number of books he authored, as well as newspaper and magazine articles. The audio tapes primarily contain interviews conducted by McBride with numerous actors and actresses concerning specific Hollywood personalities. The tapes are RESTRICTED, however, and may not be listened to without the written consent of Joseph McBride. The additions are divided into eight subseries: GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE, BOOKS, MAGAZINE ARTICLES, NEWSPAPERS, SCRIPTS (FILM, TELEVISON, and THEATER), UNRELATED COMPOSITIONS, SCRIPT PROJECTS, and AUDIO RECORDINGS. The GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE subseries contains both personal and professional correspondence, mostly incoming and dating from 1960 to 1982. The bulk of the personal correspondence is from McBride's immediate family. One folder consists of letters from his wife, Linda Detra McBride (whom he divorced in 1973) and daughter, Jessica. Another contains letters from his father, Raymond McBride. A third folder consists of correspondence, 1960-1964, to McBride's mother Marian, from well-known politicians and statesmen. The BOOKS subseries contains scripts, drafts, galleys, edited manuscripts, promotion, and other papers concerning nine books McBride authored from 1972 to 1983, arranged chronologically by publication date. The majority of this material covers the 1980 publication of High and Inside: The Complete Guide to Baseball Slang, which underwent numerous revisions over the years. First entitled “Baseballese,” it was subsequently known as “The Language of Baseball,” “Baseball Talk,” “Speaking of Baseball,” and “The Complete Book of Baseball Slang.” There are also several boxes of material on the book Hawks on Hawks, published in 1982. The MAGAZINE ARTICLES subseries is comprised of notes and information on nearly 35 pieces on television and film, written by McBride from 1960 to 1982. The articles are arranged chronologically by publication date. The NEWSPAPERS subseries consists primarily of material collected by McBride during his years on Daily Variety and Variety, roughly from 1974 to 1981, including press releases; obituaries; general news and features; and film, television, theater, and concert reviews. Only the general news, feature articles, and reviews, however, were written by McBride. In addition, there are some drafts, unpublished articles, and research notes produced by McBride during his years on the University of Wisconsin's Daily Cardinal, the Wisconsin State Journal, and the Riverside Press-Enterprise. The material is arranged chronologically. The SCRIPTS subseries provides a detailed look at the steps involved in the creation of a working script (in the media of film, television, and theater) and includes source material, treatments, outlines, interview transcripts, page proofs, galleys, and drafts. The series is sub-divided into Scripts-Film, Scripts-Television, and Scripts-Theater, although the majority of the scripts were written for film. However, only three film scripts actually were produced: Blood and Guts (1978), Rock 'n' Roll High School (1979), and Prom Night (1980). The television script material concerns McBride's involvement with The American Film Institute's salutes to Jimmy Stewart (1980), Fred Astaire (1981), Frank Capra (1982), and John Huston (1983), which he wrote or co-wrote. It also documents the production Let Poland Be Poland, which was broadcast by satellite around the world in January 1982. The theater scripts include American National Theatre and Academy Tribute to James Stewart (1981), plus some unproduced pieces. It is important to note that although scripts often underwent title changes during the draft stages, they are listed according to final titles. The UNRELATED COMPOSITIONS subseries contains articles, notes, reviews, and the like written by McBride from 1962-1977, arranged chronologically. Most concern films and filmmakers. The SCRIPT PROJECTS subseries contains undated notes, sketches, and ideas for more than 60 potential scripts written by McBride. They are arranged alphabetically by title. The AUDIO RECORDINGS subseries contains 66 tape recordings, most of which are interviews conducted by McBride during the early 1980s. They include sessions with Frank Capra, Billy Wilder, Jimmy Stewart, Jacqueline Bisset, Donna Reed, Audrey Hepburn, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, and Robert Mitchum, among others. As many of the interviews were conducted over the telephone, the audio may be of inferior quality. : The audio tapes may not be listened to without the written consent of Joseph McBride.
