Richard Schickel Papers, 1953-2006

Biography/History

Richard Schickel was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on February 10, 1933. Before graduating with a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin in 1955, he served as associate editor and drama critic for the student newspaper The Daily Cardinal. After graduation, he moved to New York City to pursue his career.

Mr. Schickel was a film historian, film maker, and film critic. He wrote over 30 books, and was a film critic for Life, Time, and Truthdig.com. As a documentary filmmaker he created a series of profiles on great American directors.

He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1964.

Richard Schickel died in Los Angeles, California, on February 17, 2017.
