videorecordings The collection is divided into ten series: ADMINISTRATION, COUNSELORS ACADEMY,
HISTORICAL FILES, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, PUBLICATIONS, SECTIONS, SILVER ANVIL
ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS, TASK FORCES AND COMMITTEES, and SILVER ANVIL AWARDS. Because
there is some overlap between the series, researchers will sometimes need to look in
more than one series or subseries for related material. The ADMINISTRATION series, 1965-2003, is organized into ten subseries including: Board
of Directors, Chapters, Chief Operating Officer, Financial Statements, Membership,
Miscellaneous, North American Public Relations Council, Press Releases, Salary Surveys,
and Visibility Reports and Clippings Files. The Board of Directors subseries, 1987-1996, includes
agendas, notes, correspondence, reports, supplementary documents, and minutes of
meetings of the Board of Directors. The subseries also contain a limited collection of
biographies of members of the board. The Chapters subseries, 1965-1999, (bulk 1991-1999)
contains handbooks for chapter leaders, development and promotional materials and
membership administration papers and is arranged alphabetically by subject. The Chapters
themselves are organized into 10 districts and include over 100 chapters. The Chief Operating Officer Files subseries, 1993-2000,
consists of the files of Ray Gaulke, Chief Operating Officer of the Public Relations
Society of America (1993-2000). These files are arranged alphabetically by subject. The Financial Statements subseries, 1981-1985, includes
income and expense reports, memos, allocated budgets, and correspondence about PRSA
finances. Membership subseries, 1970-2002, contains primarily
administration and development materials relating to membership maintenance and
recruitment. Miscellaneous subseries, 1982-2003, consists of files
on the Big Apple awards, chapter leadership portfolio, graphic standards, Professional
Resource Guides, PRSA annual leadership rally, PRSA logo, PRSA national leadership
rally, and the task force on professional services taxes-report. The North American Public Relations Council (NAPRC)
subseries, 1981-2002 (bulk 1985-1993), contains files related to the NAPRC, an umbrella
organization serving the public relations profession, of which PRSA is a member. These
files include correspondence, meeting minutes, and background material as well as
correspondence (1984-1988) with eleven member organizations relating to the development
of a code of ethics and statement on Public Relations. This subseries is arranged
chronologically with the exception of the correspondence, which is arranged
alphabetically by organization names. The Publications Records subseries, 1981-1997, contains
Public Relations Journal (1985-1990), The Strategist (1994-1997) and press releases (1981-1990). The Salary Surveys subseries, 1992-2001, includes raw
data and published reports of a number of salary surveys of public relations
professionals. The bulk of the subseries consists of the records of the International
Association of Business Communicators/Public Relations Society of America (IABC/PRSA)
Survey of Communications and PR Professionals, which was conducted in 2000. The Visibility Reports and Clippings Files subseries,
1989-1996, consists of articles arranged chronologically that specifically mention PRSA
and clippings on general public relations topics. Some of these clippings are combined
into “visibility reports,” quarterly collections of articles on Public
Relations and PRSA, which were sent to PRSA leadership. The COUNSELORS ACADEMY series, 1961-2002, contains files of a professional interest
section of the PRSA. It is composed of Public Relations experts with ten or more years
of experience that provide resources and guidance to principal and senior counselors of
public relations firms. The files consist of general correspondence, various committee
papers, papers relating to specific events, financial records, and membership
administration. The series also contains an extensive collection of monographs
(1970-2002) that provide advice and insight into the public relations profession. The HISTORICAL FILES series, 1949-1967 (bulk 1955-1963), are arranged in five
subseries: Donald Lynch, Shirley Smith, Thomas J. Seedorf, Rea Smith, and Robert Bliss,
based on creator ownership. With the exception of Seedorf and Smith, all files belong to
individuals who appear to be executive leaders of the PRSA. The PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT series contains seven subseries providing information on
various programs of the PRSA: Accreditation, College of Fellows, National and
International Conference, PRSA Foundation, Information Center, Professional Resource
Center, and the Public Relations Student Society of America. The Accreditation subseries, 1979-2006 (bulk
1985-2000), is arranged according to original order. PRSA has provided its members with
a professional certification program since 1964. PRSA administered accreditation until
1998, when administration shifted to the Universal Accreditation Board, which includes
members from a variety of public relations organizations. The files consist of by-laws,
policies, surveys, examination materials, articles, pamphlets, correspondence, the
future of the Public Relations Committee, Continuing Education Board, graduate programs,
and the Universal Accreditation Board. The College of Fellows subseries, 1990-2004 (bulk 1995
to 2000), was founded in 1989. Approximately 10-25 PRSA fellows each year are selected
based on career achievements, ethical conduct, and service to the profession: they serve
as mentors to the society at large. The files include class lists and nominations,
correspondence, Induction Dinner programs and general information, membership
directories, committees, and promotional materials. The National and International Conference subseries,
1955 to 2000. Each year PRSA hosts a major conference. They were known as National
Conferences until 1998; since then they have been called International Conferences. The
files are arranged annually by the city holding the conference and contain final
reports, programs, section/session drafts, promotional materials, conference books,
registration, refunds, correspondence, and National Conference statistics and
tickets. The PRSA Foundation , 1991-2003, began in 1990 with the
initial goal of producing the National Credibility Index to determine which sources of
information are most credible to the public; they have since re-focused their goals on
education and research in the field of public relations. This subseries primarily
consists of materials related to the establishment of the National Credibility Index,
including background information on the Foundation and a professional career guide. Information Center subseries, 1979-1997, contains the
bibliography for Public Relations professionals, the management education package, the
MGI Professional Reference Programs, Professional Development Guide, professional
development seminars and focus groups, a portfolio series including research and
evaluation, PRSA forum series, “What is PR?” packet, the Information Center
booklet and the top Public Relations Officers listed in a Fortune 500 magazine. The Professional Resource Center subseries, 1938-1993,
includes clippings, speeches, and other resources the PRSA membership can utilize. The
files include speeches arranged alphabetically by speaker's last name; subject files
arranged alphabetically; Public Relations firms and notable individuals in public
relations and PRSA leaders. Additional files include organizational articles,
correspondence and research materials for the “Body of Knowledge” project.
The “Body of Knowledge” project was an annotated bibliography of technical
and scientific literature designed to provide resources to assist the building and
evolution of Public Relations theory. It was first published in 1988 with later editions
in 1989, 1990 and 1993. The Public Relations Student Society of America
subseries, 1980-1987. The Public Relations Student Society of America was formed in 1968
to “cultivate a favorable and mutually advantageous relationship between students
and professional public relations practitioners.” As of September 2007, there were
over 9,600 members of Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) in 284
universities. The files contain a brief history, ethics articles, programs, reports,
manuals, National Committee materials, National Conferences arranged annually by cities,
and the PRSA/PRSSA trademark. The PUBLICATIONS series, 1956-2003 (bulk 1980s and 1990s), contains individual
publications of PRSA including monographs, reports, brochures, papers, survey results
and other writings. The majority of the series is arranged alphabetically by title of
manuscript although some materials correspond to, and are arranged by, specific sections
within the PRSA. Serial publications include Public Relations
Strategist (1995-2004), and Public Relations Tactics:
The Green Book (1996-2002). Other serial publications of the PRSA are Public Relations Quarterly, Public
Relations Review, Public Relations Journal, and
Tactics. Additional monograph publications can be found
in the Counselor's Academy Series. The SECTIONS series, 1966-2003 (bulk 1990-2001), contains records relating to PRSA's
eighteen Professional Interest Sections, each section is designed to focus on issues,
trends and research of a specialized practice area. A large portion of the Sections
material covers the various events sponsored by each section including seminars,
teleconferences, and the sections' own conferences, sometimes held jointly between two
or more of the sections if the topics concerned both areas of public relations. In
addition, the National Conference material in the Sections series is mostly material
about the specific section's social event held during the Conference and sometimes some
material on speakers or programming at the convention sponsored/put on by the Section.
The main body of PRSA National Conference material is located in the Professional
Development series. The SILVER ANVIL AWARDS ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS series, 1963-2004 (bulk 1984-1988),
consists of programs, publications, clippings, news releases, and other records related
to the administration of the Silver Anvil Awards, the Bronze Anvil Awards, and other
related awards conferred by PRSA. The TASK FORCES AND COMMITTEES series, 1970-2003, consists of papers relating to
various task forces and committees of the PRSA. Slightly more than half of the subseries
materials are related to the headquarters task force, which considered moving the PRSA
headquarters from New York to Chicago or another city, but eventually rejected the idea.
Additional files are arranged by subject and include reports, correspondence, histories,
meetings and surveys. The SILVER ANVIL AWARDS series, 1986-2014, consists of programs, entry booklets, and
other published promotional materials related to the Silver Anvil Awards.
