Part 1 (U.S. Mss 68AN): Original Collection, 1939-1972
Physical Description: 15.2 c.f. (40 archives boxes)
Scope and Content Note

The Original Collection consists of scripts and production information arranged by genre as RADIO, TELEVISION, and THEATRE; additional series are NON-DRAMATIC WRITINGS, CORRESPONDENCE, and MISCELLANY.

The papers presented by Howard Teichmann in 1966 consisted largely of correspondence and scripts for radio and theatre. Later additions arranged and described in 1991 related to the two programs for which Teichmann worked with ANTA as writer-producer-director. For these programs the collection includes important files containing diverse material on development, promotion, and day-to-day production activities. Except for the research material on John Shubert, the collection contains little information on Teichmann's biographical writing during the 1970s and 1980s. The photographs received with the collection have been separated to the WCFTR Name and Title Files.

Teichmann's writings are arranged by genre, with the largest amount of documentation pertaining to his work as writer, editor, and producer for RADIO. Regardless of the specific function that Teichmann performed for a particular program, the documentation present consists largely of mimeographed final scripts. Most extensively documented are Ford Theatre, Road of Life, and Valiant Lady. There are also smaller quantities of scripts for Cavalcade of America (for which Teichmann's role is not specified) and for various other dramatic series. There is one incomplete and undated script for Mercury Theatre of the Air.

For ANTA's Theatre U.S.A., for which Teichmann was the writer-producer, there is a virtually complete run of mimeo scripts, together with contracts, information on salaries and expenditures, and files of press releases and promotional material. The most important correspondence here concerns the development of the radio program, as well as ANTA's early plans for Showtime U.S.A., an expanded version of the same programming concept for television.

The TELEVISION files are largely scripts and production files for Showtime U.S.A. This file contains not only material created and received by Teichmann as writer-director, but also material pertaining to the activities of ANTA executives Robert Breen and Vinton Freedley and staff members such as publicist Ned Armstrong. Present are mimeographed final scripts, correspondence, contracts, financial information, press releases, and photographs.

Teichmann's writing process is best represented in the THEATRE series, with documentation here ranging from handwritten notes and outlines, to numerous variant drafts and the final mimeographed production script. Of his produced works there are files on The Girls in 509, Julia, Jake, and Uncle Joe, Miss Lonelyhearts, and Mrs. 'Arris Goes to Paris. Similar material also relates to several unproduced or uncompleted plays. The revision process is exceptionally well documented, Teichmann having apparently saved documentation of every line deleted from the dialogue. However, for his comedy hit The Solid Gold Cadillac the documentation consists only of box office statements (although these are complete for both the original New York company and the national touring company) and correspondence dating from the period after the play's New York run. While the Cadillac files contain little relating to his collaboration with co-author George S. Kaufman the papers do include a typescript of I Give It Three Months, an apparently unproduced Kaufman-Leueen MacGrath production for which Teichmann was to act as director. In addition, the small collection of George S. Kaufman Papers of the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research includes two typed drafts of the unproduced 1954 Teichmann-Kaufman collaboration, “In the Money.”

For some plays the collection includes a small quantity of correspondence pertaining to the writing or staging of the production, as well as some miscellaneous production information. Among the prominent correspondents are Orianna Atkinson and John Shubert (regarding Julia, Jake, and Uncle Joe), George S. Kaufman (regarding Postscript), and Earl Wilson (regarding Single Girls and Home Cooking). The Alan Schneider Papers, also held by WCFTR, contain further information on the revision and staging of Miss Lonelyhearts.

Teichmann's acclaimed biographies of Kaufman, Alice Longworth Roosevelt, and Alexander Woollcott are only fragmentarily documented in the NON-DRAMATIC WRITINGS series. Included are a few articles on playwrighting and the theatre, a short story entitled “How I Became Stengel's Successor as Manager of the New York Yankees,” and publicity.

CORRESPONDENCE is quite fragmentary except for the period 1969 to 1972. For those years, the correspondence consists primarily of copies of outgoing letters of a social or personal nature. This correspondence, apparently maintained at his office at Shubert Theatrical Enterprises, also includes some separately organized files pertaining to Teichmann's active involvement in professional organizations such as the Broadway Association. Notable in the general correspondence are four typed and edited short stories by James T. Farrell apparently forwarded to Teichmann by playwright Harvey Breit for possible dramatization and an English translation of reviews received by a production of Porgy and Bess in Russia and Eastern Europe in 1955 and 1956.

The MISCELLANEOUS PAPERS consist of biographical material, photographs, and a few scripts by other playwrights for which the association with Teichmann is unknown.

Interviewees include Fonda, Lauren Bacall, Ira Gershwin, Helen Hayes, Alfred Lunt, William Paley, William Shawn, Thornton Wilder, and other prominent figures in arts, media and politics.
