Subseries: Subseries 4: Productions With Which Alan Schneider Involved“Productions with Which Alan Schneider Was Involved” consists of production files which may include correspondence; scripts; clippings; reviews; playbills; interpretive and general notes; messages; lyrics; plots and plans; reports; box office statements; contracts; tape recordings; miscellany; and research, casting, location and set, financial, and legal files. The amount of documentation varies with each production. Arrangement is alphabetical by title with the specific format (e.g., theater or motion pictures) listed with the known production information. Arrangement within productions is alphabetical by folder title with script-related materials, such as revisions and variant scripts, completing the file. Researchers should note that typically the “director's script” is heavily annotated and that, occasionally, pre-Broadway tour production materials will be intermixed with the final New York production files. Schneider directed most of these works, although a few plays in which he worked as an actor early in his career are also represented. In addition this series includes both unproduced works and produced works for which Schneider received neither directing nor acting credit. Several of these latter productions were done during Schneider's tenure as Associate Director at Arena Stage. In this capacity he often became involved in all of the season's plays. A subjective judgment was made as to whether his participation in a particular production was sufficient to warrant inclusion of the file in this series or the next. Usually, if a file included casting or some general notes which indicated Schneider's involvement, it was placed in this series whether or not he received final directing credit. The theatrical productions include Broadway, off-Broadway, regional, and university works, Appropriate production information is cited in the contents list below. The files for I Never Sang for My Father, Inquest, You Know I Can't Hear You When the Water's Running, and Zalmen or The Madness of God are particularly extensive as are those for the unproduced motion picture Piano Sport and the television production of Zalmen or The Madness of God. Also of interest is material in the Les Blancs file pertaining to a Memorial Tribute Program to Lorraine Hansberry.
