Series: Part 1, 1929-1968Part 1 of the Alan Schneider Papers are divided into nine major subseries: General Correspondence, Plays Acted In and Directed By Schneider, Scripts Read or Worked On, But Not Directed By Schneider, Academic Materials, Writing Materials, Wartime Materials, Theater Organizations and Travel, Biographical Materials, and Previously Restricted Materials. Each subseries is described further in the contents list. Each subseries begins with a new Box 1, so it is necessary to specify both the subseries number and the box number when requesting files.
Subseries: Subseries 1: General Correspondence, 1936-1967 : General correspondence is arranged chronologically by year, and within each year arranged by month. Letters without month dates appear at the end of each year; undated letters appear at the end of the subseries. Initial letters and subsequent correspondence relating to a particular subject are stapled together and filed under the date of the first letter. This subseries contains carbon copies of letters written by Schneider as well as letters from other correspondents. Appendix I contains an index of the major correspondents for each year. Whenever possible, correspondence which directly concerns plays and other projects is included under the appropriate categories elsewhere in the collection.

Subseries: Subseries 2: Plays Acted In and Directed By Schneider : In this subseries, the plays Schneider directed are subdivided into seven theater categories: Broadway, Off-Broadway, Regional, University and College, Radio Television and Film, Foreign, and Miscellany. Within these categories plays are arranged chronologically according to the date of production. The entries for each play give the author, theater, opening date, and any information regarding other productions of the same play directed by Schneider. In the folders for any given production the materials are classified in the following order. First is the general correspondence: dated, undated. If there is financial correspondence, records, or contracts, they will follow general correspondence. Second are the production notes which are arranged in the following sequence: (a) general notes--casting, set, costume and lighting designs, sound and music, rehearsal schedule, cast and crew list, and miscellaneous; (b) programs or playbills from out-of-town tryouts and opening night, as well as clippings, reviews and miscellany pertaining to the particular production; (c) various scripts--director's, original, or revised, and rewrites. Whereas all the elements mentioned may not be available for every play, those materials which are available will be found arranged in this general sequence. Researchers should note that Schneider sometimes writes notes about the production at the end of his promptbook or script, in addition to the production notes in the folder. It should also be noted that the “Miscellany” subdivision contains scripts from productions in which Schneider worked in some capacity other than or in addition to director, e.g. assistant director, stage manager, actor.

Subseries: Subseries 3: Scripts Read or Worked On, but Not Directed By Schneider : Scripts in this subseries are arranged alphabetically by author in the list which follows. When a play has been adapted or translated by someone other than the original author, the information is also included with each entry. In most cases, blank or “clean” scripts are described in the play entry. Occasionally, there may be a “note” or “inscription by Schneider” which means that Schneider commented about the play or author on a separate sheet of paper or directly on the script itself. For those scripts which Schneider intended to direct, but for some reason did not, the related materials are arranged in the following order: correspondence, production notes, director's script, and various other scripts and revisions.

Subseries: Subseries 4: Academic Materials : The materials in this subseries are arranged chronologically in two subdivisions. The first, “Student Papers,” documents Schneider's entire formal education from elementary school to his master's degree from Cornell University. This section includes numerous speeches and research papers from the University of Wisconsin, course notes, Schneider's master's thesis from Cornell, and grade reports and transcripts from all the institutions he attended as a student. The second, “Teaching Papers” documenting Schneider's work at Catholic University and other institutions, primarily consists of teaching and lecture notes.
