U.S. Mss 1AF
|
Part 1 (U.S. Mss 1AF, SC 1054, Disc 50A, Micro 443, CA 528, CA 529): Original Collection, 1897-196492.6 cubic feet (215 archives boxes, 2 card file boxes, 28 volumes, and 2 packages), 5 reels of microfilm (35 mm), 586 disc recordings, and 2 films Correspondence, 1902-1964, consists mainly of fan mail. Prior to 1927 the letters reveal Kaltenborn's efforts to gain and hold listeners. After 1930 they suggest a more sophisticated audience expressing opinions on a host of national and international issues such as the Spanish Civil War, the Munich Crisis, World War II, McCarthyism, and labor-management relations. Personal correspondence from relatives and friends includes letters describing conditions in Germany after World War II and Kaltenborn's interest in Harvard University and various philanthropic organizations and civic enterprises. There is also a segregated group of over 1000 autographs from world notables. While the majority are routine in content, there are important series of letters from Norman Angell, Chester B. Bowles, Herbert Hoover, Fannie Hurst, Fiorello La Guardia, Henrik W. van Loon, Lowell Thomas, Harry S. Truman, and Henry A. Wallace. Business correspondence, contracts, and financial statements relate to relationships with CBS, 1929-1940; NBC, 1940-1958; General Mills Inc., 1938-1939; the Pure Oil Company, 1939-1953; and the Leo Burnett advertising agency. Correspondence, minutes, reports, financial statements, and related papers also describe his involvement with several professional organizations including the Association of Radio and Television News Analysts, Broadcast Pioneers, the Overseas Press Club, the Radio-Television Committee of the American Civil Liberties Union, and the Kaltenborn Foundation, which he established to help young people planning careers in journalism and broadcasting. Radio scripts comprise a virtually complete record of his prepared broadcasts for
Kaltenborn Edits the News (CBS and NBC) and for a number of other series and specials, while television material relates primarily to “It Seems Like Yesterday” (NBC). There are also scripts for Kaltenborn Edits the News, a newsreel, and The Day the Earth Stood Still (20th Century-Fox, 1951), a feature film in which he played himself. Eighty notebooks, 1926-1961, in which Kaltenborn recorded on-the-spot observations and notes on interviews with prominent world figures document his research methods. The remainder of the collection consists of drafts of three books, “Europe Now, A First-Hand Report” (1945), “Fifty Fabulous Years” (1950), and “It Seems Like Yesterday” (1956); lectures and addresses, 1916-1961; articles, 1917-1961; copies of columns written for the Merrill (Wis.) Advocate and the General Features Syndicate, 1897-1961; publicity; scrapbooks; and memorabilia. Supplementing the papers are more than 500 sound recordings of his regularly scheduled news broadcasts, chiefly 1940-1948, and other programs in which he was a participant. There is also a film of his appearance on Person to Person (CBS). Possible Applications of the Kaltenborn Papers There are many possible applications that could be made of the Kaltenborn Papers. However, it was with the history of radio, radio speech technique, and trends of public opinion in mind that they were catalogued and noted. The H. v. Kaltenborn Papers offer the student of radio history the opportunity to study the early decades of radio news broadcasting. He will note the early interest in “Pay-as-you-hear” radio, letters from the first automobile radio listeners, and the multitude of troubles that plagued early sponsors, engineers and listeners. “Listener Applause Cards,” requests for poetry read over the air, and countless letters asking for war maps testify to some of the gimmicks used to check audience reaction over the years. The researcher, interested in the techniques of speech, will be interested in comparing Kaltenborn's finished typed scripts with his rough first drafts, examining his penciled annotations, and listening to the several recordings available in the collection. The correspondence, too, will provide clues to Kaltenborn's pronunciation. “If… I say 'Keltic' instead of Celtic,” Kaltenborn writes, “a score of pedants will write to me… Some critics go so far as to insist on the meticulous sounding of the difficult first 'n' in government.” Frequent complaints deal with Kaltenborns' roiled r's, his rendition of “Rush-ee-a,” and his s's which remind one listener of “soda water bottles going off.” Many term his speech affected or “British-like.” Kaltenborn's practice of repeating issues night after night for several days irritates some who accuse him of “preaching.” It has been suggested by several listeners that Kaltenborn occasionally reverts to the more familiar tone of platform speaker in an effort to dramatize his points, but a conversational tone is the rule rather than the exception. His sentences are usually short declarative ones containing few polysyllabic tongue-twisters. His speech is free of clichés, pet expressions, and excess use of the first person despite his role as editor. His frequent use of quotes adds life to presentations which lack anecdotes and rich description. The Kaltenborn papers provide complete and interesting data to speech and broadcasting analysts. The collection also comprises a record of historic economic, social and political events from 1923 to 1957, and because of the chronological arrangement of the papers, events are easily placed. Kaltenborn's scripts give the news while the correspondence reflects the impact of events. Students of public opinion also should find these papers valuable. Included in the Kaltenborn collection are three research aids. There is the collection of notes compiled by Giraud Chester at the University of Wisconsin for his Ph.D. thesis, “The Radio Commentaries of H. v. Kaltenborn, A Study in Persuasion” (Boxes 213-214). These notes contain material not only from the papers, but from personal interviews conducted by Chester up to and including 1947. The second aid is in the form of notes taken directly from the collection by Miss Gloria Link, a student of speech at the University of Wisconsin in 1957 (Box 212). These notes cover the years 1923-1933. The third aid is a collection of notes much like the second, except that they are broken down into ten categories listed below: - Public Opinion
- Rhetoric
- History of Radio/TV
- Techniques of Radio/TV
- Politics, Domestic
- Politics, International
- Letters of Outstanding Persons
- Economic
- HVK, the man
- National Defense
These notes span the years 1934-1957 and were compiled by Henry C. Boltz Jr., student of political science at the University of Wisconsin in 1958 (Box 212).
